PGD Results Not What Excepted

I received my PGD results this morning right before transfer. We planned on transferring two embryos but could only transfer one. I had 9 embryos in total. 1 came back normal, 7 came back abnormal, and 1 came back inconclusive. They performed another biopsy on the embryo with inconclusive results before freezing it. The lab takes 24-48 hours to perform the diagnosis, so hopefully we will have another healthy embryo for future attempts.

I was very surprised though at the high percentage of abnormal embryos. I am 33 and DH is 33. They only issue diagnosed between us in a sperm morphology at 40%.

What have your PGD results have been like?

Re: PGD Results Not What Excepted

  • No experience, but I'm sorry your results weren't what you were hoping for @SparrowTales.  That just sucks.  I hope your little embryo nestles in...  And your frozen one ends up being normal as well.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your results! FX that your healthy embryo sticks.
  • Ultimately it only takes 1. I haven't ever had this testing but was considering it for this next cycle... I mean, it definitely increases your chances for the fact that you didn't transfer 1 or 2 abnormal ones which would have almost certainly not ended in pregnancy. The good news is you KNOW that one is good, and given that you have no other diagnosis would say there's a silver lining. Maybe that has been the issue all along? I'm crossing my fingers for you. Positive vibes all the way!

  • Thank you for the encouraging words @oxinfree. I believe I'm over the initial shock of having so many diagnosed as abnormal. Everything is pointing towards this cycle working and that certainly is a silver lining.
  • I read somewhere that when it's a sperm issue, the number of abnormal embryos is slightly higher BECAUSE of the sperm. Like, without the assistance of ICSI, those sperm would probably been unable to fertilize that egg. So by using abnormal sperm , sometimes you get an abnormal embryo.

  • So sorr, I had similar results with our embryos & I was 35 at the time of retrieval. Technically, there isn't anything wrong with us from a fertility perspective but the failure rate was high.

Our RE had also consulted with couple other REs as well and pretty much everyone said that it was not within the range expected for my age (which is probably what they told you too). Other than that, nothing much to go on at this point. The only outcome from that is, our embryos in the future will require PGS testing before proceeding because of the high failure rate :-(

DH :  36, has Chronic Kidney Disease, on dialysis & is waiting on the transplant list (average wait for B+ is 5 years)

Me:   36, Hypothyroidism, PCOS, BMI 32, need to be done with "child bearing" ASAP so that I can be a Kidney donor (was fun realizing we didn't as much time as we thought :-/ )

    We're TTC#1

    IUI #1 : 5mcg Letrozole (CD 3-7) + Ovidrel Trigger + Had the one follicle = BFN  (March 2014)

IUI #2 : 5mcg Letrozole (CD 3-7) + 150 iu Bravelle on CD9 (after much begging!) + Had the one follicle = BFN (April 2014)

7th May 2014 - changed REs, this one seems to care (we think....)

    IUI #3 : 7mcg Letrozole (CD 3- 7) + 75 iu Bravelle (CD 8-12) + CD12 Scan 5/16 + Had 3 follicles (2 under 15mm) = BFN(May 2014)

    IUI #4 : 7mcg Letrozole (CD 3- 7) + 75 iu Bravelle (CD 8-12) + CD12 Scan 5/16 + Had 1 follicle + DH gave best sample so far = BFN(June 2014)

IVF#1 -  ER Only Cycle Sept-Oct 2014, 17  eggs Retrieved, 14 mature, 10 fertilized, 6 made it to Blast & post PGS  5 were not viable due to chromosomal abnormalities
Not sure where we go from here...

We're parents to two very adorable, bratty, affectionate & goofy Bernese Mountain Dog pups who would very much like a 2 legged baby brother or sister of their own!

  • @sparrowTales - I am in the same boat as you.  We also were doing IVF due to MFI (  morphology issues) We did our first IVF cycle back in July,  11 eggs collected,  8 mature,  all 8 fertilized with ICSI we did PGD testing and also had only 1 come back normal!   Also interesting to me was the fact that the 1 normal one wasn't the highest grade embryo.   We were shocked and pretty devastated that we had such poor results and we certainly were not prepared for it.   We haven't gotten much of an explanation from our RE on this other than it may also be an egg quality issue (at the time of that cycle I was 36).  We did do a frozen transfer in November of our 1 good embryo and unfortunately that resulted in a chemical.  We are preparing now for a second cycle in January.

Fingers crossed for you that you get great results from your transfer and have another in the bank!

  • I'm sorry it wasn't what you expected. It only takes one! I know how frustrating that can be. We had 6 and 3 were abnormal. The doc said it wasn't abnormal for 1/2 to be abnormal for my age. I'm 38 and DH is 43. Unexplained infertility. Transferring the last one today! Fingers crossed for you @SparrowTales .
  • good luck with your transfer @joyzie77 wishing, hoping and praying for a BFP for you!!
  • Sorry for your bad news. We are on the fence about it PDG this time. I haven't done a lot of research about it yet. Will they transfer the abnormal ones or are those guaranteed to have problems?
  • @missilini, they will not use embryos whose results came back abnormal. I had testing done on day 3 embryos and I have read that some embryos may "correct" themselves by day 5. Next time, I plan on having them biopsy the embryos on day 5. PGD results take 24-48 hours to come in, so the embryos will have to be frozen. There is evidence though that suggests a FET may have greater success because it allows the endometrial lining to recover from the fertility medication.
