Infertility

PCOS and autism

Of course I read this recent study that suggests there is a link between mothers with PCOS and children with autism . It has me all freaked out . My mother passed the article along to me and said "maybe you should adopt " . Incredibly insensitive . I couldn't believe she said that to me .

I work with children with Autism and other challenges so I feel like I'm already a nervous wreck about becoming a mother once I'm actually able to conceive . Anyone else read it ? Thoughts ??

Re: PCOS and autism

  • I read it, and thought about it a lot. I was shocked and hurt at first, but decided to look at it this way: I know 3 women personally who have children with Autism. None of them have PCOS.
I know women who have PCOS, and their children have no medical concerns whatsoever.
Regardless of the new statistics, to which I'm really still questioning the credibility, I say the chances are there for everyone. Every woman worries about these things whether they have PCOS or not. It's a chance we take regardless, and we accept it if it happens and we will still be the best mothers we can be given our circumstances.

Don't frighten yourself with statistics. The chances are there for everyone. Just be hopeful for a beautiful healthy baby to call you mommy :)

Btw my mom can be super insensitive at times too, making similar comments. Don't let it get to you. I'm confident, and you should be too, that you'll have beautiful healthy babies.
No point in stressing over it, Lord knows we have enough to stress about with PCOS.

  • I was super curious about this after reading your post @mskeenan so I found a couple of articles, both with the same study information, and thought I'd share them for others.

Here is a more scientific article: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-new-autism-risk-factor-moms-with-polycystic-ovaries/ but this one has this to say: "With ASD rates hovering around 1 to 2 percent in the general population, he explains, even an almost 60 percent increase in ASD rates in children born to PCOS-affected moms translates into just a fraction of a percent higher chance of the disease overall."

Here is an article this English major understands: https://thestir.cafemom.com/pregnancy/193792/the_link_between_pcos_autism
