Food aversions!

Is anyone else dealing with really bad food aversions?! I'm not nauseous anymore but my food aversions are out of control. I'm a vegan and generally a very healthy eater, so it's really inconvenient and strange that I can't stomach the things I've been eating on a daily basis for years. Raw veggies, most fruit (even in smoothies), beans, tofu, protein powder, hummus, oatmeal...all things I ate regularly before that I can't even look at now. It's driving me (and my husband) crazy and I really hope it lets up soon!

Re: Food aversions!

  • Yes but I am completely opposite of you! I am not a vegan or vegetarian normally and during this pregnancy even the thought of meat makes me want to vomit.

It is the oddest feeling- I am starving, but absolutely nothing is appealing to me.

I have been living off of peanut butter, almonds, bagels, clementines, apples and granola bars. Even things like pizza are repulsive because of the cheese and grease.

I am seriously worried about this baby getting enough protein- but s/he is getting bigger at every appointment at least!

  • I, too, am in the "meat makes me want to gag" camp, but usually just food in general never sounds good. I'm driving my husband crazy because if something does actually sound good I HAVETOHAVEITRIGHTNOW because I'm so used to joylessly forcing food down my throat. I just told my sister yesterday how miserable it is to be always hungry but not feel like eating anything! Hoping this stage passes soon.
  • Yep. I normally eat paleo and I can't stomach meat or vegetables right now, so that's a problem. I basically live off of whole grain toast with cream cheese.

I'm very glad my aversion to coffee has let up though. Thank god.
  • Yep, most vegetables and meat are repulsive right now. We made ground beef tacos the other night and I forced one down before I had to stop from gagging. I have been craving fruit smoothies, cheese, and sweets. Totally opposite of how I normally eat. I rarely had dessert pre pregnancy and we normally eat lots of veggies and lean meats. We have a full veggie garden in the summer. I guess it's a good thing the garden is out of season right now because I wouldn't be touching most of those veggies. I didn't have morning sickness and this food aversion thing is a new development in the past 2 weeks. I'm 13+4 today.
  • Yes, fruits, veggies, meats and cheese (minus bananas) make me vomit instantly and I have food aversions to everything. The only thing I've been able to stomach is toast, bread and forms of bread. I found out I have celiacs disease last week so the only thing I can eat now is bananas and tortilla chips. I have never felt so helpless and desperate to find something I can stomach. So miserable
  • Yes!!! Just the sight of meat makes me gag. I think my husband thinks I have lost my mind because I didn't have any of this with DD.

  • Wow! I'm not alone. I've been adverse to meat since almost day one. Veggies are hit or miss. My husband has been saying recently he's concerned I'm not getting enough protein.

Yes. This exactly. If it sounds good, I have to just eat it, because as soon as I start thinking about it, the food no longer sounds good. Seems like it is getting a little better and more stuff seems tolerable. Weeks 6-11.5 though.....yuck. NOTHING sounded good. And I still don't get excited about any foods like I used to. Prepregnancy I would be planning what sounded good for dinner in my head while I was still eating lunch.
  • I'm not a big meat eater anyway so that aversion doesn't bother me. My doctor has a specific protein requirement everyday for me each day. So, to meet it I'm living on Greek yogurt which has the same amount of protein a a 3oz steak. I'm also forcing down cottage cheese.

  • I lost my strong aversion to meat a few weeks ago so I can stomach it if I make myself eat it. That being said, I'm also in the hungry but nothing we have sounds good camp. I feel like I'm eating so much every day because every meal is a chore but based on the fact that I'm still losing small amounts of weight I guess not....

@alysemciver sorry to hear about the celiac diagnosis. I've been dxed for 3 years now and never had a problem with it until recently. There are a few companies who make decent GF imitations of pasta and bread. If you're a Costco member most now sell 30 oz Udis bread loaves for a price that's pretty close to what the small freezer loaves go for. I usually try to ration it since its a bit pricey but I've been able to get through entire loaves before having to freeze any of it (to prevent mold) because bread is the one food that I can consistently stomach.
  • Meat is my biggest aversion, too.  It's better than with DS, though.  Before I couldn't eat or smell any.  I've eaten a bit here and there and actually craved turkey for awhile.

I hated meat, fish and veg until 12 weeks and then it settled down. Although I'm still not keen on chicken. Just try and eat whatever takes your fancy. I've said it a million times on this board...lol...but getting calories is more important than vitamins and minerals at this time as your prenatal will cover those. I lived off cereal, mash, mac &cheese and yogurt. The only one of these I would ever normally eat is the yogurt. Being vegan is particularly tricky as the food aversions really narrowed down my selection when I am not vegan. Keep trying different things but you will probably find carbs the most appealing! Getting a protein source may be tricky for you though.
  • I do not eat meat or most dairy and have been having aversions to a lot of the things I used to get protein from - faux meats, tofu, nuts, and nut butters. Not that I'm craving meat - I'm definitely not! I have been getting most of my protein through soy yogurt and non-dairy milk.
I have been worried about protein though. I have been putting oatmeal and PB in my smoothies, which hasn't been very appetizing. I've also been eating vegan protein bars where the protein source is from peas.... They're gross.
I'm hoping my aversions go away soon because I definitely don't think I'm getting the recommended amount of protein right now :(

  • Ugh. All of the above. I feel like there's nothing I can eat but strawberries. Then I see something suggestive like a post about a food or commercial that sounds good and I get an instant and severe case of the gimme gimme gimmes. No meat though, and apparently from today's attempt at lunch, no lobster. (Crying).

I just want food back. I feel like I went through a bad break up and am stalking my ex; just come back appetite! I promise I'll treat you so good!

  • A new one for me. Mini Wheats cereal
  • The thought of meatballs makes me gag.

  • I used to love chicken wings! Now the smell of them puts me off. I tried to eat garlic parmesan wings yesterday, ( they were my favorite) and I threw up not two minutes later!
  • i haven't been able to eat sweet potatoes since my first pregnancy.  I thought I would get over it- but no.

Chicken is hit or miss for me... 1/2 of the time I bite into it and the texture makes me think it's rare.  Sometimes I am able to eat it though- which is good when I forget to bring lunch I can still grab a grilled chicken sandwich downstairs.  Lately though- the thought of eating period has turned me off.. nothing sounds good.  Salty warm foods has been the most appealing- but I can't (and don't want to) live off McDonald's fries.

  • I can't do meat.  Just can't.

Unless it's ground beef in a pasta meat sauce lol.  But no chicken, steak, pork, nothing like that.  I tried eating chicken last night and got one bite down before I had to give it to DH.

  • Hell no's: Chicken (unless fried?...idk), eggs, seafood, cold meat, pork.

Nah, probably not: Zucchini and sweets.

Slightly random tendencies over here, but the food aversion situation is real.

@alysemciver: Sorry to hear about the celiac's diagnosis!
  • Poor DH made a lovely dinner tonight for us, but when it was ready and I smelled it, I wanted to throw up. :( It was a chicken thigh with peanut sauce recipe from ones of my pregnancy books. Some sick joke, right? Ended up forcing down mac and cheese. I just want to have an appetite again!
  • Still having aversions here too grilled chicken makes me gag. I used to eat it 4-5x per week maybe that's why!

  • My husband and I weight-lift, so we eat a lot of protein: mainly turkey and chicken. Around week 8, I got the worst poultry aversion! The smell of chicken, or turkey made me nauseous! It was terrible! Even now I can't stand chicken unless it "doesn't taste like chicken" and can only do ground turkey--again, as long it doesn't taste like turkey!

Oh and guess which major holiday happened shortly after developing this turkey/chicken aversion: THANKSGIVING! So my family, being from Memphis, TN, had "Porks-giving"!

I was pretty surprised how early the food aversion started and how specific it is!

  • My raw veggies aversion seems to be getting slightly better, but the last few days I haven't been able to drink my morning coffee. :( This is cruel!
