Caffeine?

I've been drinking iced tea and hot tea recently to try to help with headaches. Is the caffeine okay? And is hot tea okay? I've heard mixed reviews about whether or not I can drink hot tea.

Re: Caffeine?

  • You can have 200mg of caffeine...it's fine!
I've never heard about not having hot tea. I've been drinking regular tea (w/ milk) & hot peppermint tea all along. My OB said it wasn't an issue.

You are allowed upto 200mg of caffine a day but you still have to limit normal hot tea to 2-3 cups a day. Peppermint doesn't matter as it is caffeine free.

The amount of caffeine found in some foods and drinks is as follows:

one mug of instant coffee: 100mg
one mug of filter coffee: 140mg
    one mug of tea: 75mg
    one can of cola: 40mg
one can of energy drink: up to 80mg
one 50g bar of plain chocolate: most products on the UK market contain less than 25mg
one 50g bar of milk chocolate: most products on the UK market contain less than 10mg.

    Iced tea

Instant, prepared with water 8 oz. (237 mL) 11-47 mg.

    Ready-to-drink, bottled 8 oz. (237 mL) 5-40 mg

So, in one day, you will almost reach your 200mg limit of caffeine if you have:
two mugs of hot tea and one can of cola.
  • Great! Thanks so much for the info. I usually only have one glass of iced tea or 1 cup of hot tea. @Atlast111
  • You are good to go then!
  • I always stick rigidly to the 200mg rule. I love caffeine but have become an expert at "budgeting" it each day.
  • I just wanted to add that I've heard you shouldn't drink green tea for some reason, but I can't remember why. I'll have to look that up. I don't like green tea that much myself so I've just avoided it and not really questioned it.

Green tea can stimulate contractions in some and it doesn't allow the body to absorb as much folic acid

  • For what it's worth ladies, I drink decaf tea and coffee and they are really good. Coming from someone who used to be a massive caffine lover!
  • I drink a caffeinated beverage every morning... because I need to make it though the day somehow! I try to refrain for the rest of the day though. BUT, if I'm having trouble, I'll have another in later afternoon. I do always stay under 200 mg.
  • I had my Cerclage put in today and had a headache following the procedure - the nurse made me a cup of tea to help.
