STM's- Gliders/Rocking chairs

Hi ladies. My parents asked me what we wanted for Christmas and I just said something for baby. They suggested, very generously, to buy us a glider.

My question is do we have to have one? Real estate is at a premium in the nursery and frankly the chair in my own bedroom is only used as a place for my husbands clothes. Also, I'm really gravitating to the upholstered ones and they are expensive.

So speak now please-
Gliders: necessary or marketing?

Re: STM's- Gliders/Rocking chairs

  • I used mine because I nursed and would feed her and put her to bed. We just had a rocking chair with a cushion..nothing fancy but we definitely have something for #2
  • Loading the player...
  • I had one with my first two boys and used it all the time but we had room. Sold it and now won't be getting one (no room) and I'm not worried. If you have room they are great.
  • I would definetly say glider over rocking chair. We have a rocking chair in dd's nursery that was dh's grandmas, it does the job, but it moves across the carpet as I rock and frustrated me to no end during motn feedings! You will use it a lot more than you probably think!
  • The glider we got for DS was our one splurge. It is a Dutalier and we have loved it! He is now 2 and we still use it every day.
We are trying to figure out how we will get it out of his room when LO arrives as I don't want to buy another.....
  • We were gifted a glider from BRU with my DS. It's been 6 years and we still use it. We have it in our living room and use it all the time. When we put it in our bedroom, clothes ended up on it too. MOTF happen in my living room so I can watch tv or else I'd fall asleep. I don't know what I would have done without it. Some kind of glider or rocker is necessary in my opinion.
  • We used ours every single night and nap for many many months with DD. I felt like we lived in it. It was magical and necessary. I'm hoping with this LO that we don't rely on it as much. She depended on being rocked to sleep longer than I wanted.
  • Ok. Well there you go. I was looking at some at Pottery Barn. They have these conversion kits where you can add feet to the chairs when you no longer need a glider. I feel like if I'm bringing a piece of upholstered furniture into this house I want to use it beyond early childhood.
    Thanks for all the feedback!
  • I think it also depends on how big your house is. Our house is smaller 1 story, and even though we had a glider I rarely used it. I always nursed in the recliner in the living room. Now we use the glider to rock DS to sleep, but it was never a necessity for us.

  • 3 kiddos never used one. I just used my bed or the couch.

  • I love our chair from PBK! We still use it every day and I love that the cover comes off and can be washed. It is good quality, comfy, and will last a long time.
  • We got a rocking recliner and I practically lived in it. I was an EPer so a lot of time was spent pumping. We were going to put it in the nursery but decided to keep it in the living room so I could watch tv and pump. Seriously love that chair.
  • We were gifted a 20 year old glider and still use it daily for our 21 month old. It is nice to have somewhere to read, rock, nurse, or just soothe a crying baby.
  • We bought a laZboy rocker/ recliner. It was totally necessary. Will use the same one with this one.
  • Get what is most comfortable with you and your back. We took an upholstered rocker from my mom's basement and my "nesting" was making a cover for it that matched the nursery. Nothing fancy. My son's room is teeny, but we still fit the crib, changing table, rocker and a tiny end table with a soft lit lamp. I lived in our rocker. I kept all my pumping gear there, and my kindle and some chargers and was ready for nursing or bonding and rocking for hours. It was right in a sunny window, so we spent lots of time in it together with the window open in spring and summer. That window is still my son's favorite perch. We arranged his whole room around it :) We just recently brought the rocker out to the living room, and will be moving it again when we get the new nursery underway. Go for comfort and ease of rocking. I suggest a footstool of sorts too. We just got one of those upholstered storage cubes from Target. If you have a c-section you will want anything to help ease the healing process, and feet up is a must.
  • This thread made me picture life after the baby is born. It's been such a long year TTC, and now I'm so focused on getting through the nausea, I haven't really thought about life after pregnancy. It was a nice feeling, so thanks for that. :)

  • I love ours, it's a basic one from BRU. DD is almost 2 and we use it every day. I was just talking to DH about what we are going to do with baby 2... I'm not ready for DD 1 to grow up!
  • Whether or not you 'need' one is definitely determined by whether or not you have one lol. We had an extra upholstered rocking/recliner that we put in our son's room. We didn't use it for the first few months because he was in our room with us, but once he moved to his crib we used (and still use!) it daily. It's actually looking a little worse for the wear so we're looking to get ourselves another similar chair. DH has fallen asleep in it numerous times so we're looking to get another chair that is just as comfy.

Just a note, if you plan on breastfeeding, it is sometimes really nice to have any sort of comfortable chair in a room 'away from it all' so you can escape to 'nurse the baby.' I had no issues nursing in front of people but sometimes Momma needed a break and having a twenty minute rocking-nursing session can be very rejuvenating. (Not that you couldn't do this on a bed somewhere, but building that pillow wall of support can sometimes be a PITA.)

  • We have an upholstered rocking chair w/ ottoman and it's one of my favorite things we registered for. I couldn't imagine not having it. I fed DD in it every day and now that she's older we sit and read books every night in it. Once the new LO has outgrown it we will be able to keep it since it doesn't look like it only belongs in a nursery. I highly recommend having one!

  • I really loved mine. There were some nights I just BF'd in bed but that KILLED my back (if I was sitting up) or I BF'd laying down and then I felt really paranoid that I'd fall asleep and roll over baby or something.

Feeding/bumping on the glider for MOTN feedings were great for me. My husband and his brother dubbed it the "breastfeeding chair" but any time I wasn't in it, they were. It's seriously very comfortable (Dutailier brand).
  • I used one from the beginning with my son.  I would be lost without it.  I have spent many nights in that chair.  I highly recommend a super plush, furniture like glider.  Also, my son's nursery is TEENY and we still made it work.

This! Super tiny room but we still squished in a plush furniture chair. Worth it!

  • I think they are magic. I can't tell you how many times I just slept there nursing babies.
  • I got a rocker from pottery barn that converts to a regular chair and we still use it daily for books and milk putting my son to bed but one huge mistake I made is the back isn't high enough to rest your head on and in the middle of the night that would have been really nice. On the other hand, my friends husband fell asleep in one that was too comfy and dropped their 1 week old (she was colic so he was way overtired and she was fine) so get one that's comfy...just not that comfy!!
  • we have a glider/rocking chair that is upholstered and looks like a regular chair. The footrest comes up on it and it also has a gliding footstool.

I have slept in that chair more than I care to admit. I absolutely love it. Even almost 6 years later, it still looks brand new despite still using it every night to sit and read with my 3 year old.

Can you do without one? Probably, but it has been a lifesaver to me.

  • Check out Costco, we got a nice one from there and it was a great price!
