sudden fussy 7 week old

Baby has been very fussy the past two days. Up most the night crying and when he eats on the breast he isn't eating as long as he usually does and when he unlatches he screams and cries and he won't latch back on but then in 10 minutes he's sucking on his hands again like he wants more. He seems like he may be constipated, he hasn't been pooping as much as he usually does. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice? I've tried gripe water, gas drops, bicycling his legs, rubbing his belly. I'm at my wits end. I just want to know what's wrong with him. he usually sleeps for 4-5 hours once in the middle of the night then 2-3 hours but lately it's been 20 min- 1 hr or fighting sleep until 5 am. help!! I haven't changed my diet either! thank you!

Re: sudden fussy 7 week old

  • My 7 week old has been randomly very fussy and fighting sleep and not eating much at each feeding but acting hungry! I'm blaming it on the 8 week "wonder week". Her sleep "schedule" has been completely out of whack too! Shouldn't be too much longer till she regulates! Hang in there :)

  • Ahhh thank you!! I've never heard of the wonder week! What is it exactly?

Not something I had really heard about with my first but I've seen lots of people reference it this time around.

    Hope the phase passes quickly.

  • Oh my gosh it's like you wrote this post about my life. We are having the same problem with my 7 week old. I don't really have any advice since we are in the same boat but I'll have to check out this wonder week thing too. Also, We took our sons temperature and it was 99.4, which according to the doctor is not a fever that needs medical attention, but it did prompt us to put him in a cooler outfit because he seemed warm. Cooled his temperature right off so that could be something to consider too?
  • Im having the same issue with my 10week old! No idea whats wrong!!
  • I'm with you ladies! My screams at me after I feed him. Only it doesn't seem like his diapers are as full as they once were. At first I thought it was because he seems to spit up everything he takes in, but he doesn't do that every time. He just doesn't seem very happy any more. He still has dirty diapers, eats well, no fever, but fights sleep and cries more.
  • My 7-week old is very similar. However, he's sleeping long (3-4 hours) through the night but just seems super fussy and won't nap during the day unless he's cuddled against me. So hard to get anything done until I gave in today and just started wearing him around. He's super content right now.
He's had stomach/digestive issues since day 1. Dr hasn't been concerned, though.

  • Weeks 6-8 were challenging for us. They have a physical growth spurt at 6 weeks and then the wonder week. It was a rough time but week 9 gave us longer sleep stretches.
  • My LO will be 7 weeks old on Wednesday and does the same as yours OP. Our pediatrician said it is likely reflux. We have tried Zantac, but it hasn't helped. It would be fantastic if it was just a short phase, but I'm scared it isn't and we will have to deal with this for months.
  • My LO started doing this last monday at 6weeks: Screams to be fed, feeds for a few minutes then pops off and starts screaming, wailing, waving his arms and pushing up to stand on my belly with his legs and waves his mouth back and forth over my nipple without latching. If I stand up and bounce him he will calm down some and suck his hand or root on my arm so I go back to offer him more and he won't latch and starts doing everything mentioned above again....

I went to an LC last Friday after dealing with that behavior for 4 days and she agreed that it was all related to acid reflux (we knew that he had that before but he had been ok with feeding up until then and only slightly fussy after being fed.) She said it was best just to do smaller more frequent feedings because they eat and their tummy starts to hurt and they know they are hungry but realize the milk is making them more uncomfortable.

We had him on Zantac and he would NOT take it. It tastes awful (even after being flavored) so our pediatrician put him on prilosec and he has been taking that no problem and seems to be improving!

I know what you are going through and Im so sorry and hope that you can find a solution very soon! If you have a pump, I would recommend pumping some bottles so someone can help you feed him to give yourself a break!
