Cord Blood

A friend of mine was due January 6 but had her baby Thursday :) She told me that I needed to request that the doctor allow all of the blood to finish pumping before they clamp the umbilical cord. I did a little research and see both the pros and cons. Anyone else doing this?

Re: Cord Blood

  • We are planning on delaying cord clamping. It doesn't take long, I was told about 3-5 minutes. Just until the cord stops pulsing. We knew banking cord blood was out of the question due to cost, so it just makes sense for it not to go to waste.

I would suggest you mention to your OB at your next appointment that you wish to delay clamping and include it in your birth plan, if you are bringing one with you to delivery.

  • We are absolutely doing it. In fact, it's standard practice at our hospital. What are the cons of it?

The only cons are if your baby is born premature delayed cord clamping increases chances of bilirubin issues and jaundice, which is already a risk for premature babies.
    Edit: words are hard.
  • It is standard care at my hospital as well. I was going to discuss with my OB as I had heard nothing but good things, but since it's standard we'll go with it! I thought it was going to be a battle to get them to do it
  • I will be doing it. The studies that show that it increases risk of hyperbilirubinemia in preemies also show that it is not symptomatic usually, just slightly alarming for the parents because the babe is yellow lol. I will also be strongly advocating that babe remains attached to the cord even should he (god forbid) require resuscitation, as he will continue to receive oxygentated blood through the cord from the placenta until it stops pulsating.

  • Absolutely doing it! At our childbirth class the instructor told us that some outrageously high percentage of babies blood does not get into them if the cord is clamped immediately. I can't remember the number now, but it was surprisingly high. It is not yet standard of care at our hospital but she believed it would be soon.

It's about 30%, babe is estimated to have about 300mL of blood and the placenta contains about 150mL at the time of birth.

  • We'll be sending our cord blood to a bank- but for a donation- so it's completely free and will hopefully save someone's life.
