Anyone "High Risk" yet?

**It's been a while since I've posted, life is crazy at the moment!**
Flame me if I should have put this in the symptoms thread. I just thought it really wasn't a symptom...

So last Friday I received blood work results that show I have not one but two clotting disorders (lucky me). But, when I asked my doctor about whether or not I am now considered high risk, she just said, "I like to use those words lightly." This was a phone consult and I have my next appointment a week from now but I'm feeling like it's way early to be considered high risk. I wasn't with DD, although I probably should have been. (Scary story, not for the faint of heart, or FTMs. But I'll share with anyone who wants to know!)

I just don't know what "high risk" entails if my doctor is so cautious to use the term. Anyone else already been categorized as high risk yet?

Re: Anyone "High Risk" yet?

  • I had GD last time which doesn't sound too crazy until you add in it was uncontrollable with diet and excercise and it was insulin resistant. Even though I ate nothing but vegetables and meat my placenta calcified early and I had to be induced. Not necessarily high risk but I had 4 doctors appointments each weak to monitor if the baby was ok and if I was ok. I have a 3/4 chance of getting it again and having the same issues.

  • I am.  Have been since before my first pregnancy.  I clot and we don't know why, but have no known conditions.  I'm on blood thinners for life.  Are they putting you on injectable blood thinners?

  • @lilwatz They haven't found a specific clotting disorder yet? That seems crazy! Prayers for you! No injections or blood thinners at the moment. I have PAI-1 4g5g - which doesn't require anything more than me taking extra folate and a baby aspirin everyday. I also have MTHFR (which I have affectionately started calling it Mother F'er disorder). I'm sure I'll know more next week at my appointment. Doc did say that I'd have to be seen more often, but that was really all she told me for now.

It's so new, both the disorders and this pregnancy that I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

  • Yes, because of triplets.  I will also almost for sure have GD again.
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI!
Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!

  • Yes because of HELLP Syndrome and PreE with my last pregnancy and Im also carrying twins

  • I was also high risk before I was even pregnant due to diabetes and slightly elevated blood pressure. But both are under control for the most part. Working closely with MFM for the correct insulin dosages for me.
  • Was high risk my first pregnancy with twins. What it means is you will be followed closer and maybe referred to your specialist. If you think you need to be considered high risk definitely have a discussion with your dr, so nothing gets missed.
  • To a specialist
  • @SouthernVOL well, that is nice.  The injectables are not fun.  But I am pretty used to them.  I've done them for years between TTC and last pregnancy and now TTC and this one!  Yeah, 20% of clotting disorders are not known as to why.  It is speculated that they are genetic, but science has not identified the gene yet.  Regardless, I clot bad so I am fine with the medicine to help me not die.

As for multiple things, I also have an asshole thyroid which makes me high risk and I had GD last time too.  I know about multiple issues during pregnancy.  It sucks, but I remind myself despite all of these things, my daughter and I both walked away from the pregnancy and delivery perfectly healthy.  Worth it.

  • Yes, I have been considered high risk from the start due to MTHFR. I don't have a history of clotting, fortunately, so I'm on extra L-methylfolate and baby aspirin. My MFM and regular OB both anticipate a normal pregnancy, so fingers crossed!
  • I was put on bed rest at 8 weeks because of an ultrasound(done because I had some spotting) showing that my cervix was incredibly short and that the baby implanted really low(They feared I had an incompetent cervix and full placenta previa). I finally got off bed rest at 12 weeks after a second ultrasound showed that my cervix looked normal and that the placenta had moved up a bit. I've still got partial placenta previa, but my doctor is confident that it will correct itself well before I'm at full term.

Let me tell you, bed rest in the first trimester was a total labor of love.
  • I think I fall into a higher risk category, I'm 38, my oldest daughter has Turner Syndrome, and my thyroid has been freaking out. I think I am waiting on an appt my dr wants me to have with a perintologist.. probably way mispelled....
  • @mebaby333 how has your thyroid been freaking out?  This is the first time I've ever had thyroid issues- started on meds for hyperactive thyroid last week (10w pregnant).  Thyroid stuff is all new to me.

  • I'm technically high risk, since I had a blood clot while on oral BC 10 years ago. I'm already on heparin injections 2x per day, so my stomach is a lovely blotch of yellow and purple. At around 30 weeks I have to start weekly NSTs and biophysical profiles. Otherwise, pretty normal, but they take zero chances with anything clot-related.
  • Due to my first daughter being stillborn and having to be induced at 6 months pregnant I will be and have been considered high risk with every subsequent pregnancy. I tend to start having contractions that make cervical changes starting around 6 months due to my body now thinking that is when Im supposed too give birth. I also have to see genetic specialists etc. With my 2nd pregnancy it was pretty bad and had to be put on bed rest and had several trip to labor and delivery, we kept her in till the day before her due date! Major success. With my son things where even better and I had him the day after my due date. My last two pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Im hoping this time around for even less preterm labor issues.
  • Due to an incompetent cervix in my last pregnancy leading to preterm labor and birth at 19 weeks, I am technically high risk. I think I will be taken to "not as high risk" after my cerclage Friday
  • I'm technically high risk as well. I'm on once/day Lovenox shots due to a history of clots. I was on twice/day Heparin shots last pregnancy for the same reason.
  • I'm high risk due to Pre E with DD. I had a failed induction at 37 weeks and subsequent emergency c section. I don't have to see a specialist yet, hoping it stays that way. I will have a ton of appts and u/s though.
  • I have been labeled as high risk since 5 weeks due to my progesterone issues. I am on twice a week shots and nightly vaginal suppositories.
  • I don't know if i am "high risk" but the ultrasound tech just freaked out because i had had a LEEP about 8 years ago and said i am at a high risk for incompetent cervix ( that name is just rude).  She has me scheduled to come in every two weeks for ultrasounds on top of my normal OB visits.
    FUN!

I also have a fibroid near my cervix which could block the baby's exit.  DOUBLE FUN!
  • We are for identical twins. Working with MFM and ultrasound every two weeks for TTTS.

Just wait for the bi- weekly nst's... Those are the worst lol!!!! My mono-di girls are two.
  • I started this pregnancy as high risk because I'm 35 and I've had multiple losses, including a mid-gestation loss.

  • I am, as my 2nd daughter had a congenital lung defect. The perinatologist said that I may be removed from being high risk when/if the anatomy scan comes back normal.

Thank you! I ended up having to leave my job 2 months early because I couldn't get the time I needed off and my doctor said they couldn't keep me as a patient if I didn't go to the necessary appointments. I had a NST, U/S, follow up and specialist appointment every single week. It was a lot but worth it. Also I got to see my baby boy every week!
