Please help!

Our expectant mother is having a rough time and is considering going to urgent care or ER today. I'm not sure what to advise her. I can't say, I think it's ok if it might not be but what do you think???

She's had a bad headache/almost migraine for 4 days now, she's been cramping but no discharge/bleeding and now she's having back pain. Do you think she should go to L&D/ER??

Does she have a nurse's line she can call? I cramp but my OB said not to worry at this point unless there is bleeding as well.

ETA- the bump ate part of my response. It depends on how intense the pain is though, too.

All those symptoms are pretty normal IF they're mild. Extreme symptoms should probably be checked out. Does her OB have an after hours call line? Maybe see if yyu can talk to a doctor/nurse at her OB.

Yes, we called the nurse at L&D and they said if it doesn't get better in a little bit to go to the ER for an ultrasound to make sure baby is ok. She said it's been going on for 4 days though so now I'm starting to get concerned. She said she's going to stretch, put a heating pad on her back on low for 10 minutes and lay down to see if it helps.

I also get headaches/almost migraines. Icing my neck in a dark, quiet room, tylonel, and a little caffeine all help me.

Thanks ladies. I'll tell her to try to ice her neck, she is allergic to caffeine so she can't have any of it.

Some people prefer a heating pad but my massage therapist and chiro both say ice and it works well for me.

Another thing that helps is icy hot but I don't think that's ok for pregnancy. I think the vanishing scent with just menthol is ok, though.

Four days is definitely significant. Id say if the pain doesn't subside then go to ER just for peace of mind to make sure baby is a-ok and that nothing is wrong w her. Keep us posted. Hope all is well.

Just have her go in for her peace of mind and yours. It can't hurt to be safe and maybe it will ease her mind a little. I know you said she has bad anxiety so this might seem worse than it actually is, but still just as real to her.

Update: She layed down with a cold cloth on her neck and a warm pad on her back on low for a bit and she said she's doing better a couple hours ago. I'm hoping for an update shortly, I just text her to see how she is. We have an OB appointment on Wednesday but if she's still having pain tomorrow and cramping, we'll probably request to be seen tomorrow rather than Wednesday.

Good plan...

I forget, has she had any children before? If so, she probably has a somewhat good idea of what is normal or not. If she didn't go in, hopefully she felt everything wasn't too extreme. Praying for you.

I feel dumb for not thinking of this before but is she drinking enough water? Dehydration can cause cramping and headaches.

Ditto- have her drink a lot of Smart water in the meantime. I've had severe headaches lasting days during this pregnancy I was Dx with hemicrania continua (which is basically a one sided headache that never ends) years ago. My headaches during the pregnancy have been bad and I can't have caffeine either Bc it exacerbates the frequency of the headaches. I use 'The Hug' from Origins. It's a heavy wrap filled with peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender (very light fragrance) that can be heated or frozen. It's $32 and I highly recommend it if she has more. It's also good for just releasing tension across the shoulders from stress which it seems like she's had some of too. I put it in the microwave and plop it wherever it hurts.

I hope she continues to feel better!

Thank you ladies!! She ended up not going in, she rested for a while and was doing a little better. She's still having some cramping but just mild. Her headache got a little better too. She drinks a TON of water but somehow she always needs more. I'm talking like over 100 oz a day normally. Her body just requires a lot more than usual. Our appointment is Wednesday so I will feel more at ease then.

@Love4Labs326 Glad she is feeling better! if she's drinking that much water, she needs to make sure she isn't flushing out all her electrolytes. Definitely switch in some Smart Water or other electrolyte enriched water in the mix as too much water can cause dehydration by leeching the salts and minerals out of your body. This can cause headaches, body aches, and dizziness from low blood pressure.

@SMLmom Thank you so much! I haven't had time to post but we had our appointment yesterday. The doctor was running 1 hr 45 min behind, so instead of just a doppler she did an ultrasound for us since we were her last patient of the day. I was so scared until I started seeing the little flicker on the screen and then I finally was able to breathe. Baby is doing wonderful! HB of 171, which I thought was a little high for 12 wks but she said it was fine and "Sprout" as we are calling baby now has 2 tiny arms, 2 tiny little legs and a huge head lol. We are so relieved!

Our NT scan is tomorrow and she said we should get some good pictures during that. She also said that at our 16 week appointment she will do another ultrasound and will try to determine the gender but we will also schedule our AS when we check out tomorrow for 18 weeks. I couldn't be any happier right now!

Our birth mom is doing good, headache mostly resolved and cramping subsided as well.
