Unexpected news from doctor

My doctors has been monitoring my hcg levels and they had been doubling nicely until yesterday i was 5700 on Sunday i also had an ultrasound were they saw a yolk sack no h/b my doctor checked my levels again on Thursday and said i should be at 20,000. I received a call from the office nurse saying i was only 14,000 but dont have anything to worry about but they would like me to come in for an ultrasound on Monday morning. About 2 hours later i received another call this time from my doctor saying she thinks i might be having a miscarriage but we should have anwers by the end of next week. I called my husband in tears and asked him to get home. I found an ultrasound center and we decided to go in because waiting 2 days would be way to hard. We went in and they saw a fetal pole with a heart beat. I feel fine and have not had any bleeding or cramping. I know i will get my answers next week but i was just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue were your hormone levels did not double perfectly .

Re: Unexpected news from doctor

  • Hi @MrsAddy24 . I am so sorry. That sounds traumatizing! I'm glad you were able to see you little one. That sounds amazing to see the heartbeat!!

My numbers are not doubling perfectly either. My doctor said that can mean 1 of 3 things:

    1. You have an ectopic pregnancy
    2. It's an indication that you will miscarry
    3. You are in the 15% of women that have lower than normal hcg for whatever reason, but go on to have a completely normal pregnancy.

Also, my doctor said that after your hcg is over 6,000, it will slow down and not double as quickly as before.

Sending you h&p. Hopefully everything is okay.

  • @Pupatella thank you so much

Once your levels that above 6000, they don't double up every 48 hours. Even at the beginning, they would like them to double every 48 to 72 hours. I've included a link to the betabase which is very helpful. How far along are you?

Obviously, I don't have a crystal ball… But your number sound great for where you are. They're slightly above the median point. Here's another link.

  • I'm pretty sure at that point my doctor doesn't even want me to come back to see it double. They are just going to check that it is within the correct range. Huge hugs.
  • That's the bad thing with technology....sometimes if things are a little off we naturally think the worse. It doesnt sound like you have anything to worry about!
  • Thank you ladies
  • T&P that everything is okay!

  • Eventually HCG levels do not double as rapidly.  I would not worry just yet.  My perinatologist says that until 8 weeks that he never makes a judgment call about how successful a pregnancy is going to be.

My last pregnancy I went in for an ultrasound at 5w5d.  All they saw was a sac.  No fetal pole and definitely now HB.  The sac was measuring larger, so my doctor said that this pregnancy was going to end in a blighted ovum.  I was devastated and the next few days were miserable.  I had to go back for an ultrasound a week later (I really went back six days early) and they saw a fetal pole measuring exactly to my dates and a healthy HB.  A lot can happen in just a few days.  Sending lot of T&Ps that all is ok.

DDRRT1982 I wish doctors were more optimistic and would not scare pregnant women by saying things like that.  I've had some spotting and bleeding and was in Urgent Care all day yesterday and the final doctor of the day (I saw a few all day) seemed like the most optimistic doctor ever.  Sure, he listed what could go wrong and what may happen but he also told me about cases where he has seen this and the pregnancy has went on to full term and ended in a happy, healthy baby.  A lot can happen in a few days and I am so sorry that you had to go through those few miserable days.
