Holy effin leg cramps

They are relentless. Time after time during my pregnancy I've been woken out of a deep sleep by these EXCRUTIATING cramps in my left calf. They only last a few seconds, but they sure do make their presence known. Anyone else dealing with this? I eat a lot of bananas so I know I'm getting decent amounts of potassium, so like what the hell?!

Re: Holy effin leg cramps

  • I've been getting them too. I hate it because they wake me out of a dead sleep and I'm not awake enough to figure out which way to move my foot to make it go away. The next morning my calves are so sore when I first get out of bed.

  • I had a leg cramp from hell that left me sore for a week. It was so bad that my entire leg cramped up, not just a calf muscle. I had to start like sucking down the water every single day just to make them stop. Bananas didn't work for me and gave me horrible heartburn.
  • @62406 yes that is exactly what happens to me!! And @maddisonwallace mine stay sore for up to a week afterwards too. It is so bizarre. I was told that using a rolling pin on it afterwards can help but it's not doing much for me. And, with the rolling pin I can feel the exact spot where the knot/spasm is and it feels so nasty!
  • Oh, it's not the leg pain that will wake me up.
It's whatever hip I'm laying on will hurt like it wars to fall off... From the hip to my knee...
    So, I'll turn over
    *repeats*
I'll get maybe an hour of sleep before I'm RUDELY awakened and have to turn over...
    I want it to stop....
I was getting relief by laying on my back.. But then I start snoring.. So that's not gonna work.
  • @scornwell717 I'm not sure how a pin would help. But I bet one of those rollers that athletic people use (don't know what it's called because clearly, I am not one of those athletic people) would help. It's for stuff like that. My husband (an athletic person lol) uses one. They look like medieval torture devices.
  • I've had it. The best thing for me is to actually stand up while is happening and put weight on my foot- rather than just straightening it out.
  • Flex your foot up
  • I hear ya! I place this as my worst pregnancy symptom. I threw up 7-11 times a day in first trimester and have had bleeding /subchorionic hemorrhage etc but I still place this as the worst.

I get it so much and I've tried everything too. I even had three leg cramps (one in my foot and one on each leg) while on a date with my hubby last night at the drive thru theater. Flexing the foot right when it starts helps but still hurts.
  • Oh my god!!! This new to me, it just started a week ago usually while I'm sleeping. Last night I had to lift my toes with my other foot to get the cramp to stop. Ugh! Like we don't have enough to deal with at night.
  • Magnesium is supposed to help. I just started getting them so I am going to start drinking a magnesium supplement at night and see if t helps.

Was going to say this. I had read potassium, magnesium, and staying hydrated will help!
  • Thanks for the input ladies! @ShannyFann yeah mine only happen at night for some reason, never ever while I'm awake! So annoying.
@maddisonwallace I think I can picture this athletic doohickey you're talking about but I don't know what it's called either. I guess a rolling pin was suggested to me because it has a similar effect? I feel like I just need a Swedish masseuse to come to my house and work magic on my leg. And then the rest of my body while she's at it.
  • I had been having bad foot cramps and then I added a glass of OJ to my morning with extra calcium and vitamin D, no more foot cramps!
  • I know how you feel! I usually love a good stretch first thing in the morning but I've noticed I have to be careful with my legs. I hit a point that I know if keep stretching it'll trigger a cramp and I'll be miserable the rest of the day.

  • I flex my foot as hard and as for as long as I can the minute I feel a calf cramp start and it goes away. Pointing my foot makes it worse.

I was getting calf and foot cramps for a few days in a row around 34 weeks (this is my 3rd pregnancy and these were new to me). I already drink a lot of water, but I added 3 to 4 more glasses of water a day, a banana or 2 daily and as many leafy greens as possible. The cramps went away within a couple of days :) Thank goodness ;)
  • I took magnesium last night before bed and for the first time in like a week I didn't wake up with leg cramps in the middle of the night. Maybe coincidence but I will be taking it again tonight for sure!
  • Hmm I'll have to try magnesium! Thanks guys!
  • I, knock on wood, haven't gotten the leg cramps with this pregnancy. Instead, I just get the achy feeling like you do after having the leg cramps! Every morning, my legs ache as if I had the cramps and it lasts about half the day...
  • Silly question BUT
I hate bananas with a passion. I think they are mushy and gross and just gross.
    What is the banana equivilant?
  • @carlyhammond apparently sweet potatoes have even more potassium than bananas! I think beans and yogurt are good sources as well

Tomatoes are high in potassium believe it or not!

  • These are HORRIBLE. It started for me in third trimester & some are painful I've literally been in tears. They last so long. It's actually scarey.
  • Well, I do love yogurt and tomatoes (not together of course- even in pregnancy)
Sweet potatoes are only yummy mashed up with marshmallows lol.

    Thanks y'all :)
  • The athletic thing that might be worth a try is called a foam roller in the U.K. Anyway (although it is painful to use in itself!!)...I find not drinking enough water in the day sets off the cramps! So painful!!!
