Hello ladies, I thought of starting a little pacifier usage questionnaire and would appreciate your answers :)

1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private? (the next questions apply only for those who use a pacifier)
2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
3. When do you plan to get rid of the paci?
4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?
5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?

Thank you!

Re: Pacifier survey

  • I'll start:
    1. Casually. We'll go for a big trip around holidays to visit LO's grandparents and it involves 7 plane rides, so we wanted some mechanism to help LO with ear pressure and keep him quiet.
    2. Soothies. We got some NUK ones from MIL, but decided against using them because the LC said the shape doesn't resemble the nipple.
    3. Hopefully by 6 months
    4. We are not using it during sleep
    5. 5 min max :(
  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private? (the next questions apply only for those who use a pacifier). My husband was against pacifiers but he soon realized that's it's more of a calming thing then a baby habit thing. My little one only likes a pacifier when he wants it and won't take it all the time.

    2. What brand is the pacifier that LO likes? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
He has always liked the soothie.

    3. When do you plan to get rid of the paci? On or before 1 year.

    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both? Both sometime he just wants to suck but isn't hungry so I give the paci.

    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out? It depends normally he falls asleep with it and will suck on it for about 5 mins before it falls out.

  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private?
Yes, he has always comfort sucked and it gave my nipples a break. There are times now he refuses the breast and just wants his pacifier because he isn't actually hungry.
    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
Soothie, we tried nuk but he won't even allow it in his mouth so we didn't try others.
    3. When do you plan to get rid of the paci?
One year is my goal. We'll see how it goes lol
    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?
Any times really. He uses it for naps but not really bed time. It is beside him at bed and at times I see him trying to get to it when he wakes but he wakes me if he has it and it falls out sinc eh can't actually get it back in.
    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?
It varies. If he's in the car seat or swing he has kept in it for 1-2 hours. If he's just hanging out no more than a half hour.
  • 1. Yes, desperation really. He was being very colicky and it worked to soothe him sometimes. He's better but it just works for us to keep using it.

    2. Soothies. This is the one he got in the hospital after his circumcision and it stuck. I got a free dr Brown's one and tried it but he didn't like.

    3. Hoping to at 6 months

    4. Both. Whenever he asks for it. He doesn't need it as much to help him fall asleep but he will occasionally.

    5. Maybe half an hour. Mostly only that long if he falls asleep with it.
  • No, but not by choice. I waited 2 weeks to give him one so it didn't hurt my milk supply or his latch. Now he just spits it out immediately and gives me this 'blech what was that?!' face

Sometimes it'd be nice if he would take one but I've been trying for 2 months now with no success. Oh well

  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private? (the next questions apply only for those who use a pacifier)
Yes. H was against it with DD1 but only lasted 1 day home from the hospital before realizing how useful it is. With this one we've used since we've been home.
    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
MAM. We bought others but this is the first we tried and it worked for her.
    3. When do you plan to get rid of the Paci? Will see. With DD1 we started only using for sleep and car rides at 12 mo and kicked completely about 15.
    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both? Both
    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out? Depends. Sometimes hours, sometimes minutes.

  • 1.Yes, I wasn't planning on using one but LO loves to comfort suck and would spend hours on my boob to put herself to sleep. Once we had breastfeeding down (around 4 weeks) we gave her one to give me a break.

2.We tried using Nuk and she didn't go for those. She liked Soothies but has trouble keeping them in her mouth. We've had the best luck with Tommee Tippee, she loves them and can actually hold them in her mouth. We tried MAM but she didn't really care for those either.

    3. We haven't talked about a set age, we'll see how things go.

    4. She uses it pretty frequently to put herself to sleep for naps and bed time, but she never keeps it in while she sleeps. We take it away before we put her down or else she wakes up every time it falls out. Sometimes I give it to her after she's done eating because she still wants to suck.

    5. If she doesn't want to suck she'll spit it out right away. Otherwise, she'll keep it in for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on how long she wants to suck. If she falls asleep with it, it usually falls out within a couple minutes.
  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private?
She's a comfort sucker and although she wasn't quite colicky she did enjoy her screaming. SO was pushing it off saying she was too young for it at 5 weeks so I just kept reminding him it was there. He lasted 20 minutes into my Dr's appointment before he sent me a picture of her with it.

    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
She loves her two mam ones. The bases fit perfectly under her nose. The avent and nuk ones we have have bigger bases even though they are the right size. Haven't tried her soothie yet.

    3. When do you plan to get rid of the paci?
Haven't gotten that far yet. Right now I'm just enjoying our content baby

    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?
Both. She definitely doesn't need it to sleep most of the time but it does help sometimes.

    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?
She ranges from two minutes to a couple of hours. In her rock and play she can even sometimes get it back in on her own if it's just next to her head.
  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private? (the next questions apply only for those who use a pacifier)

Yes. Our pediatrician actually convinced us it was okay to use. She feels strongly about a newborn's need to suck for comfort. There is also research that shows pacifier usage decreases SIDS risk.

    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?

    She'll only take the Soothie

    3. When do you plan to get rid of the paci?

Again, according to pediatrician recommendation, hopefully around 3 months old. She says that, older than that, the biological need to suck lessens and babies are able to get their hands to their mouths to better self-soothe. And it's easier to break the habit that young.

    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?

    Both

    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?

It varies. Sometimes a couple of minutes, sometimes half an hour
  • 1. Yes. Absolutely. Started in the hospital. I was EBF at the time and he was nursing non stop (i mean hours) and I needed a break haha. I know the classes promote not using a pacifier when BFF but especially after our delivery I needed even an hour of sleep.

    2. We've tried many different kinds. We used Nuk in the hospital since that's the only kind we had appropriate for his age. Then he LOVED soothies. Now MAM seems to be working fine as well.

    3. I'll let him have it as long as he needs until he's old enough to understand better how to fall asleep and to self soothe. I only offer it when he really needs some help, though, as it is.

    4. We only use it as needed. He likes his pacifier but is not dependent on it at all. Some nights I can tell he's cranky and I offer it. If he's really fussy and needs a nap but having a hard time falling asleep I offer it. Etc.

    5. Sometimes 2 seconds, sometimes 20 minutes... sometimes he realizes he wants it and sometimes taking the pacifier makes him realize it's NOT what he wants and he calms down.
  • 1. Are you using a pacifier?
LO wouldn't take one until after we saw an infant feeding specialist because she wouldn't take a bottle. The specialist had us to exercises with the pacifier to coordinate her suck, swallow breathe, pattern and it helped her take a bottle. We use it now to calm her down when she's hungry and I'm getting my boob out or the bottle is warming up.

    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?
We tried many but the specialist recommended soothies so that's what we use now.

    3. When do you plan to get rid of the Paci?
She doesn't cry for it now so probably when we start solid foods and don't need to wait for a bottle to warm up.

    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?
Just for keeping her comforted when she's hungry.
    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?
    Like 2 minutes, ha!
  • We learned last night that LO will wake over and over for his pacifier if I don't take it before putting him in bed. I usually pop it out after he falls asleep and rock him until he's back asleep. Last night I just let it in his mouth and he was up and down all night. After a week of 6 hour stretches last night kicked my butt.

    Thank you!

    1. Yes. DD1 wouldn't take one and we were determined to get DD2 to take one ha! FTM fail but DD1 got used to a bottle to fall asleep, and I wanted DD2 to have other soothing options.
    2. Gumdrop. We tried Nuk and Dr. Brown but she doesn't like the shape of the nipples. She's formula fed though so the gumdrop paci best resembles a bottle nipple.
    3. I don't think the paci habit will last long. I'm not concerned.
    4. Sleep time/fussy time. She gets overly tired or stimulated and the paci helps to soothe her and bring her back down after getting herself so worked up in hysterics.
    5. 5 minutes at best. It's literally just a distraction from being upset more than anything else.

    1. Yes. Night 2 in the hospital after an hour and 45 min feeding session baby and mama were exhausted and the nurses suggested it (I always knew we would try I was just having mom guilt about going that route so soon....stupid mom guilt)
    2. We have a bunch of cute themed NUKS that he took in the beginning but we also had one MAM that my husband preferred to use, he was convinced he kept it in longer. We were using both for a while but now he'll only take the MAM.
    3. My goal is by 1 year. My mom and I both have strong feelings about a baby taking a binky out to talk.
    4. Both. Some days he goes to sleep with it but I try and remove it before putting him down because he'll spit it out and either think he needs it again or it falls behind his head and pokes him!
    5. Some days he'll play games and spit out every couple of minutes but other times it could be 20-30
  • 1. Yep I'm using a pacifier. I love to have something that soothes my baby. It comes in handy when they get bigger too. My oldest used a pacifier until she was two. She was always content in the car, at a restaurant, and at bedtime. She loved her "binkies!" My second child refused to take them from day one, so I'm hoping this one will stick with it.

    2. Soothie. Not the cutest one, but it's the one she likes.

    3. I will take it away around two or three if she is still using it. I'm not really concerned about her taking it to college..

    4. She only takes it at night. It helps her sleep. She's not really interested during the day.

    5. 5 or 10 minutes max. It falls out while she is sleeping

  • 2. Gumdrop. We tried Nuk and Dr. Brown but she doesn't like the shape of the nipples. She's formula fed though so the gumdrop paci best resembles a bottle

I am totally going to try that brand now!
  • 1. Are you using a pacifier? What's the reasoning behind your decision, if it's not private? (the next questions apply only for those who use a pacifier)

We are. We weren't going to but we ended up in the ER and they gave him one so we kept at it. It's a nice way for him to burn some energy or keep occupied and it soothes him in the car when he's likely to cry his head off! He doesn't sleep with it. He will suck it when in his car seat, swing, or when he's awake and hanging out on the boppy.

    2. What brand of pacifier does LO like? Did you try other ones before settling on this one?

We have been using the Philips Advent Soothie which is what they gave us in the ER. I really like the ones with the little stuffed toy attached. He doesn't lose them and is already holding his little giraffe. It's so cute!

    3. When do you plan to get rid of the Paci?

Hopefully before 5-6 months. But I won't make any promises! I read that if you get rid of it then it won't be a problem later.

    4. Are you using the pacifier during sleep time, outside sleep time or both?

Mostly outside of sleep. If he's stirring but not fully awake sometimes giving him the paci will help him sleep longer.

    5. How long does LO keep the paci before dropping/spitting it out?

Not long! Maybe 30 seconds unless he's very into it! He doesn't even want it most of the time. If he's tired he will spit it out and fall asleep. He uses one maybe 3-4 times a day.
