Toddler beds

This isn't really pregnancy related, but now that one of the threads has me thinking of what I need for baby #2, I was wondering what age you typically move your child from a crib to a toddler bed?

Re: Toddler beds

  • Wondering the same. We looked at toddler beds today and I'm actually thinking of getting my daughter a day bed, with a rail on the side.
  • Loading the player...
  • For my son's 2nd birthday, we got him a full size bed and just put it right on the floor. He went straight from the crib to this bed. He transitioned really well and thinks he isn't allowed to get out of it unless we're in his room. It was definitely time for him, he was starting to wake up a lot in the night and just seemed to be done with the crib. I think it all depends on the kid.
  • We moved DD when she was 2 1/2 (3m before DD2 was born). We skipped the "toddler bed" and went straight to a full size bed. We wanted something that she could keep for awhile. We ordered side gates (that hooked to each other to be more secure) on amazon. DD2 will be just a little over 2 when LO arrives so I think we will leave her in her crib until closer to 2 1/2 also; since LO will be in a bassinet for the first few months.
  • The toddler bed isn't totally necessary (unless your crib already converts to one). As far as when, I hold out as long as possible. Things that would make me move from a crib would be:

    1) Kid can climb out
    2) Kid is potty trained and needs to be able to go to the bathroom on their own
    3) You are pregnant enough that you can no longer lift kid in and out of the crib safely

    Otherwise, crib for life.

  • We wanted to keep the crib until DD was 3. At 2 1/2 we got thr toddler bed and thought it would be a slow process to transition....she slept in her toddler bed that night hehe. Now she is 3 1/2 and isn't a huge fan of the toddler bed...we are probably going to start with the twin mattress on the floor thing and move slowly to an entire twin bed...mostly for safety but also to see how she does before spending the money.
  • Keep your kid in the crib as long as he or she still stays in it. You'll open up a whole new set of issues once you remove it. We just went straight to regular beds for both. Double sized which I love because I can get in and read stories and snuggle. Figured they will each have this bed through high school so why not get a good one now.
  • We currently bed share with DD who is 21 months and are thinking of transitioning her to her own bed in the next couple months. We are probably leaning towards at least a full size. I don't think going from a king to a toddler bed would work. She likes her space haha

  • This tends to vary widely. Personally, I keep my kids in their cribs as long as I can. My first 2 were 19 months apart so we bought another crib. I moved DD1 out of her crib when she was almost 3. Bedtime and naps got so much harder when we switched her. We skipped a toddler bed and went to a twin bed with a foam bumper. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089CK5ME/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3AP7PU52Z8JX&coliid=I2LPWNIUZ0TMJI
