  • What makes you think it harmed the baby ? I

  • At 4 weeks the baby is just a clump of cells deeply nestled in your pelvis. Chance are the baby was unaffected but as always, if you are concerned give your doctor a call.
  • At that point you should be fine. From now on make sure you do prenatal massages. There are some pressure points they try to avoid, but otherwise as long as it's comfortable, you can lay on your stomach and get as deep of pressure as you want.

  • Some masseuses won't give a massage during 1st trimester because they fear it will cause a miscarriage (although I think that's ridiculous). Women do a lot worse at 4 weeks before knowing and if everything is ok with you, I wouldn't spend another second worrying about it.

  • I drank 9 shots of moonshine at 4w. (Didn't know I was pregnant, obviously.)

I have no doubt that you and your embryo is fine.

Mostly this is for liability. The threat of a natural miscarriage is still relatively high and they don't want you suing them if you miscarry, even after using a masseuse trained to work on pregnant ladies.I go to massage envy and as long as you do prenatal massage they're fine with it if you have a low risk pregnancy. Otherwise you need a doctor's note.

I agree, but there was mention of toxins being released that attack the fetus where I usually get a massage, so I think they sincerely believe they will cause the miscarriage and refuse prenatal massage during 1st Trimester.

My SO took me for a weekend trip that was supposed to include a couple's massage. I was 9 weeks along and "toxins being released" was the reason they gave me for refusing to do it.

eta - after researching it, I found that there's really no proof of lactic acid harming the fetus.

  • Hi im a massage therapist. In most spas mother to be prenatal massage services are offered for after the first trimester. Personally, i dont think its too bad, even a deep tissue massage as long as it feels good and appropriate while you receive the massage and drink a gallon of water with electrolytes after and the day after too. There are pressure points on the shoulders, hands, and ankles that move energy in eastern modalities like shiatsu to avoid during pregnancy because it could move energy down and/or cause contractions. I wouldnt worry about that too much either because it takes a skilled practitioner and intention to work energy meridians so even if it gets pressed during the deep tissue massage, its about breaking up adhesions and fascia in your muscle tissue not energy work. Im 8 weeks pregnant and would absolutley recieve deep tissue work especially in my back. Just one more thing i feel the most important precaution in a prenatal massage is to avoid deep pressure on the inside of the legs/ thighs because it could disrupt a blood clot and that would be dangerous. I imagine deep neck work near the scalene muscles may aggrevate the blood vessles and nerves in the front of the neck because theres more blood.
