Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I cried at dr apt today.

We went to dr for Emerson's 9 mo check up today only to find that she has a horrible double ear infection.  She said the ear had puss (I hate that word) in them.  She got a rocephin antibiotic shot and an rx.

HOW CAN A MOM NOT KNOW HER CHILD HAS AN EAR INFECTION this bad?  She's been a *little* cranky with a mild temp but, I attributed to teething.

I felt like such a crappy mom.

  • Oh no!  I've heard that ear infections can show almost no symptoms, so please don't beat yourself up about it!  That's the hard part with babies--they can't tell you when stuff like this is going on.  It is not your fault, especially when so many symptoms can be attributed to harmless things like teething.

  • don't feel bad - I have totally missed two ear infections, one of which was double.  I took him in thinking they were going to tell me he was teething again and think I was super-paranoid.  he had no temp.

    chin up!

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!
  • Don't feel bad. My little bro had one so bad that his ear drum was about to rupture. My mom had no idea. He wasn't even fussy.

  • If there was only a slight temperature and a little crankiness, I think I would have attributed it to teething, as well.  I know that doesn't make it better, but I think it would be easy to make that mistake.  It's not like she can tell you that it hurts.  :(  Don't beat yourself up.  It shows you're a good mom b/c you feel bad about it.  Just love on her bunches!
  • Ahhh (((hugs)))... don't beat yourself up.  You weren't like, "Screw this!  I don't care if my kid is sick!  Now where's my joint?!"  If there had been signs that you knew to notice you would have noticed.  If you had noticed you would have done something ASAP.  We all miss things sometimes.  Smile  Don't beat yourself up!  Neither Emerson nor you will benefit from that.
  • Adam is currently recovering from his fourth infection. He shows no signs. Every time we've taken him in for another issue - fever with a cold, cough that wouldn't go away and, in this week's case, pinkeye. There's often no way to know unless you have the doctor's little ear light thingie, and I don't think you can buy them on Amazon...
  • :(  I'm sorry to hear that.  It's not your fault!  I'm sure I would have done the same thing.  Poor E!  I hope she feels better soon.
  • we just went to the pedi for a wet cough that lasted more than 5 days and she's got an ear infection too... i had no idea... i thought it was just another cold...

  • The first time DS had ear infections it was a double and I had no clue!!  We were at the pedi for another issue.  But I've also cried to the pedi, which is a different story!  But we've been there - don't feel bad at all!!!!

  • Don't feel bad! Ear infections can occur without any symptoms. At least she'll feel better in a few days. I am sure your pedi has had many other parents bring kids in without knowing they were ill. It happens...don't worry about it.
  • It's happened to others.  DS was in for an appointment and I found out he had an ear infection, he totally had no signs!
  • I think it's surprisingly common for moms to not know their baby has an ear infection.  My neighbor said she didn't know her son had one until he BLED from his ear.  The doctor said sometimes the infection doesn't bother them.

I hate the word puss, too.  And the version of it with a y at the end.

  • It's easy to miss!  I have a friend who is a wonderful mom, and her daughter got mastoiditis, which is an ear infection so bad that it goes to the skull behind the ear.  Her daughter never rubbed her ears or anything.  Just got more miserable with no visible symptoms.

It's so hard when your LO can't talk to you, you know?

  • This post made me feel better ladies.  Isn't it crazy so many of us have had Lo's with ear infections and we didn't even know it!  Thank you guys-as always!

  • Sweetie YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  Symptoms seem a lot like teething or sometimes a cold.  Also it could have just developed in the last 24 hrs.   I've been there and done that.  It doesn't mean you are a bad mom, just a new mom who isn't a psychic.  Poor little Em!!!!  I hope she feels better real soon.
