Re: travel in second trimester

  • As long as you are not considered high risk for any reason then second trimester travel is considered safe. I flew from Chicago to LA during week 15-16 and am making the same flight again week 19-20. You just need to make sure you snack if your hungry, drink lots of water, and take breaks to stand and walk around to keep your circulation going.

  • We recently drove 9 hrs home from SF for thanksgiving and the hardest part was staying hydrated and having to take a lot of bathroom breaks.

  • Yes, it's safe unless something is wrong.

I just got back from a cross-country trip to California for work. I'm traveling again in January and even in March.

  • According to most doctors it is safe to travel long distance up to 36 weeks.

My husband and I are doing a 26 hour drive to go home for Christmas. And then driving back before New Years. Please just shoot me now!!
  • Best bet is to always ask your OB if you're concerned.

I'm taking a 3 hour plane right next week at 24 weeks pregnant, and my doctor said it was fine. She just recommended I get up every hour and move around, and if I'm having any swelling to wear compression socks to help with circulation.
  • I drove 14 hours over Thanksgiving at 28 weeks. Just make sure you are not high risk and you can always ask your doctor just to let them know.

I had to stop a lot because getting into the 3rd tri I needed to use the restroom a lot. It may take longer since you should stop often to walk around a few minutes. Don't want any swelling, etc.

  • If your not high risk you'll be okay. Be prepared you'll most likely be very uncomfortable sitting in a car that long. I've done a few car trips through out this pregnancy(we have a cabin 4 hours away). My back would ache after an hour my legs and feet would swell so bad and I do not have preeclampsia. I stop to pee every hour from sitting in the upright postion. The ways I could sit comfortable weren't safe at all if an accident occurred. Just bring thin little pillows for your back. Also a kneck pillow so you can sleep comfy and hopefully sleep throughout the trip.

This is a really a question for your doctor.

If you travel that long by car try to plan for stops every 4-6 hours to stretch your legs and walk.
