Am I Crazy? (Venting)

So.  My two best friends threw me a baby shower last weekend and my SiL flew into town for the occasion.  She's never met my friends before and, during the shower, she said that my baby would be better off going back to Iowa to be raised by her.  I am still livid, a week later, and my husband keeps telling me that I'm overreacting and that she was clearly joking.  My friends have brought it up since then, and they didn't think she was joking, either.  I am so, so, SO pissed.  Who the hell says that, period, let alone to a room full of people she doesn't know?  UGH.

  • No your not crazy, I would have cut her. That's not ok in so many ways.
  • SO not okay. Why would she even say something like that?
  • What the actual hell?!? There's no way I would allow her to come up to visit after the baby is born if that's how she is talking about you. Nope. I'd cut ALL ties with her. Who says something like that?!

    I'm pissed for you.

Even if she was joking, you're not okay with it. I would voice your concerns with her and be like hey, those words were hurtful!
  • Oh hell no!
There would be hair pulling and she would end up in the hospital.

    Pregnant or not!
  • I would be mad and give her the cold shoulder for a while, but in the end just brush it off and go about my life. She was rude, but in the end it's not like the baby would ever REALLY go live with her and it doesn't sound like you have much contact anyway.

This is sort of the stance I'm taking.  We used to be pretty close, but she's been acting like a lunatic and saying things like this since she found out I'm pregnant.
  • I don't think being pissed about the comment is an overreaction, but I have a cousin who has said things like this and it's never with malicious intent.  She's always joking, but of course it goes over like a lead balloon.  In my cousin's case, she's not trying to be a bitch or meaning that the person (me on a few occasions) won't be a good mom, she's just awkward and means something similar to "omg they are bringing XYZ cake to abc event! Give me al the cookies!"  Annoying?  Yes.  Scary the first time you hear it about your baby?  Yes.  Should she say it? No.

Just a different take on it, maybe?

Or, I could be completely wrong and she's a horse-humping thunder cunt.  In this case, take whatever stance you need to against her and shut that down!  It could totally go either way.

Thanks!  It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has family members who say strange things.  Deep down I know, of course, that it's not malicious and that she's probably just dealing with a lot of feelings I could never begin to understand (she's 43 and has never been married and doesn't have kids of her own).  But it still pisses me off.
  • Honestly, I also agree with ambercakes. If she's not normally a nut and has started acting up, she might have some heavy stuff going on in her own mind/personal life that you don't know about. Not that there is any good excuse for saying what she said, but it's smarter in the long haul to be the bigger person here. The only other way you could possibly broach this in a positive way is not to yell at her, but to tell her how hurt you were by her comment and that you are genuinely disappointed because the two of you were once so close. You might get the real story out in the open and it that might help make things better in the future. It's a tough tactic though because you have to remain calm if it turns out she was just fishing for a fight!

LOL this cracked me up too, had to share the wording with DH cos he wondered why I snorted.
  • Sounds like she embarrassed herself more than anything. I would be pissed too though.

Yep. Best part of this thread hahaha!

  • I would have told her off. I'm mean like that though.
When pregnant with my DD I was deciding on a name and my mom gave me a hard time on the name Abbigail. I decided on Pnina. My mom said she didn't like that name either. I told her it was down to Pnina or Shithead (which actually is a name because I know a lady in MN named that. She is from Africa and it's not pronounced anything like it is spelt). So she said she liked Pnina better.
