I'm 19 weeks pregnant and I'm absolutely misurable I've been having this sharp pain in my belly and everything is coming back normal and baby's perfectly healthy so far. How would I go about getting my Dr to put me on bed rest or medical leave from work ? I haven't been able to work a full shift in 2 and a half weeks it's getting a little frustrating not making the money to cover bills.. please help

  • Yeah, sorry, I get that RLP (which is what is sounds like you have) is really uncomfortable, but there isn't much you can do. If you work in an environment that requires a lot of movement and heavy lifting, then I suggest asking your employer if there is something else you can do for the remainder of your pregnancy. Short of that, considering a different job for the time being may be the best solution. Since you won't get paid if you go out on leave at 20 weeks (!?) I don't really understand how the frustrating part is not making money.

Perhaps OP is banking on STD?  However, with 21 weeks to go, and FMLA only protecting a job for 12 weeks ... seems to be another potential issue there.

OP - ditto the others, pretty much if nothing is medically wrong then you aren't likely to be put on bed rest.  Talk to your OB about pain management and talk to your employer about job duty modifications.

I'll be honest, I was put on bed rest with DS (pre-eclampsia) and it sucked.  I was worried day and night about getting to the next week of my pregnancy.  Multiple times a week I was monitored for my crazy high blood pressure, doing blood work, doing NSTs, and doing USs just to make sure that DS and I were okay.  I had the aches and pains that, honestly, intensified once I was on rest because bed rest is just that, BED rest.  I was on my left side for 5 weeks only getting up to go to the bathroom, eat, shower, and to go to an appointment.  I was told to minimize other movement as much as possible - so stretching, walking, changing position to alleviate the aches and pains wasn't really an option.

Most of the women here have been or are pregnant and you think NONE of them can relate to you? You literally think that you are the ONLY woman EVER to experience pain during pregnancy? Your doctor isn't worried. Your pain is normal.

  • Well that escalated quickly.....

Seriously OP, bed rest isn't going to fix the lack of money coming in unless you have the best disability coverage and employer EVER.  Your doctor has (repeatedly by the sounds of it) said there is nothing medically wrong with you.  OBs spend over a decade of post high school training to do their job, you think they are
    a) going to risk losing their license after all that to lie and say you need to be on bed rest and can't go to work and
    b) going to lie to you and say everything is okay when it isn't?

I'm sorry you're not feeling comfortable but you've got 21 more weeks to go and the discomfort is only going to get worse.  Pregnancy isn't the wonderful joyous time where you feel great and just glow all the time while being a human incubator, it's hard on your muscles and your body in general.

In the end, talk to your doctor and see if they can give you anything to help ease the pain, be it medications, stretches or a referral to a physical therapist of some form.  If your pain is interfering that much with your work, then make sure your doctor knows and see if he can write you a note of accommodations that your employer can provide to ease your pain.  Otherwise, let them do their job, if they decide bedrest is what you need they'll let you know.

Ouch. A twisted vagina... Maybe that's where her pain is coming from...

You and I wouldn't know. We've never felt pain before.

Well if we didn't have privileged feet we'd know what it was like to walk in her shoes
