Allergic to human milk protein?

Have any of you been told that your child might be allergic to your milk? Not something that you are eating but actually allergic to the human milk protein? I've been off dairy and soy for five weeks and nuts almost as long as I notice the diapers are full of blood when I eat nuts. Last weekend I tried to go on an elimination diet, but she got worse and broke out in a rash so I think that might have been due to the massive amounts of rice I was eating. I know two people with celiac disease who react to rice gluten so maybe thats a thing here? Anyway, based on everything I have found it seems way more likely that she is reacting to something I am eating than that she is allergic to my actual milk protein. Our doctor thinks only milk and soy cause issues and he more or less told me to expect to be told to stop breast feeding the 29th when we see the GI doctor, and to expect to go onto an amino acid formula. I just need some advice as I think that breast is best and I am looking for the support to help me get to the bottom of it.

  • No experience, but have you seen a lactation consultant?

  • If it were me I'd take the advice of the doctors and try out the amino acid formula to see if the problem is your milk but keep pumping and storing just in case it isn't so your supply isn't affected. I can imagine it's hard because you want to be able to give your baby all the good things the breastmilk provides but again if it was me I'd want to do what's best for my little one and if means formula so be it. I know it's rare for baby to be allergic to the breastmilk so fingers crossed they are able to isolate the issue.
  • No advice but fx they can figure it out soon. It seems so strange for lo to be allergic to human milk...I didn't even know that was possible.

That said I am a sympathizer as bf has been hard. I'm trying to figure out what lo is reacting to. First it was green poo, now terrible reflux and gas with stringy white stuff in yellow poo. I can't seem to get it together.

  • My co-workers son was allergic to the protein in moms milk. He was a miserable baby, beyond colicky. As soon as they made the switch he was a changed baby, super happy and no more tummy troubles. Like PP suggested, try the formula but keep pumping for a few days... Hopefully you get it figured out soon.

  • If your baby is having an issue with dairy and soy, then beef and eggs can also contribute to the problem as well if the reaction is severe enough. So you can try cutting those out as well.
  • I'm pretty sure the only way your baby can be allergic to your actual breast milk is if she has a condition called galactosemia, which is a metabolic disorder that is extremely rare and also gets screened for in the newborn metabolic panel (it's usually routine in most places but you can check with your doctor if it's been done). If your baby doesn't have this condition, then your baby is likely allergic to a protein or substance in your milk from something you're eating.
If you can't figure out what it is, and feel more comfortable switching to formula, I think that's totally reasonable but if you really want to continue breastfeeding, it's definitelty possible and don't be discouraged or let yourself be bullied by your doctor!
