Different diapers for different sex?

So has anyone else heard that diaper brands may suite one sex better than the other? I had never heard this until recently and I have now had several friends back this up. We used swaddlers with my dd and I swore by them (tried Huggies and had way more issues) but I've had a few people tell me the huggies worked way better for their boys (I guess due to pee direction). With a boy on the way I am already worried about getting sprayed in the face so want the diaper situation to be as hassle free as possible! Sorry I know their have been posts on diapers but didn't see this addressed. Thoughts??

I use Pampers and Huggies for my daughter. We mostly used Pampers when she was little because we collected the points, but Huggies worked just fine for her. She'll be two next week and we mostly use Huggies now...because she's obsessed with Mickey and Minnie (Sesame Street is on Pampers, Disney on Huggies)...but also because the Huggies Lil Movers have a double velcro tab and wider waistband as opposed to the narrower single velcro tab of Pampers Cruisers, so I think the Huggies are better suited for as active as she is.

  • I have not researched this but interesting theory. I know they make pull ups gender specific, I don't know if it's just for the characters though.

To avoid getting sprayed in the face, keep the boy's front covered with the diaper until you're ready to switch it out. Other than that, I don't think gender specific diapers are on the shelves, and if they are, they're not in bulk and probably cost more.

  • My friend swears Huggies were made for boys anf Pampers for girls. We've only really liked the Pampers swaddlers, but my ILS buy target brand and Huggies for DD.

  • It's really more about the fit on your specific baby.  Diapers are cut differently and will fit each baby differently as the size of babies varies from one to another.  This (along with skin sensitivities) is why the rule of thumb is to NOT stock up on diapers before the baby is born.

TBH, we used a variety of brands with DS and didn't notice any specific issues with any brands because he is a boy.  FWIW we primarily used Kirkland (Costco)/ Huggies (from Costco) because they were the least expensive.

Also, if you like the major brand diaper, explore using their off-brand to save $ (ie. Pamper's off-brand is Luvs.  They are run on the same lines and then split off at the end for different artwork.)

WHAT?!? Luvs is the only brand that didn't work for my DD, we never had issues with Pampers though. How bizzare...

There are different styles, so stores may not always carry the exact equivalent.  But, yes!  My dad used to work for Procter and Gamble and inspected the lines often!  He told both my sister and I about it!  (He used to also bring cases of diapers to my sister that the artwork was misaligned and couldn't be sold in the stores.)
  • I've never heard of this. We just used parents choice or the target brand with dd. Makes me curious though since we're having a boy this time.

BUT, you can always exchange them if you've not opened the packaging. I've got a small stash of about 4 brands of diapers because who knows which will fit baby. If the 7th Generation brand doesn't fit well but the target brand does, I can return the 7th gen for a giftcard and purchase the target brand.

That's true.  We exchanged 1 box with DS since we blew through that size super fast (literally only went through 1 box of size 1's).  I think my issues are that: A. target sucks for returns and exchanges, and B. It annoys me to make the returns and exchanges at any store.

People around here will also often sell the rest of their unused (but open) boxes/ sleeves on our local facebook buy-sell-trade sides.

  • Huggies definitely worked better on my son than my daughter. but we only used name brand diapers that had been given to me as baby gifts. I just bought the Target brand for both my son and my daughter and we didn't have any problems. But I agree with pp that I think I has a lot to do with the baby's body type.

  • This is interesting to read because we've decided to cloth diaper and there are definitely methods for cloth folds that are suggested for boys vs for girls.
Maybe sposies just pad the diapers really well throughout the entire diaper so they don't have to make 2 styles. Sounds like the key is to experiment with what works for your little one!
  • @yodiggity I've started stocking up on various brands in various sizes with exactly this intention. I figure even if they don't work, at least I'll have collateral diapers so I won't feel like I'm spending quite as much when she gets here!
  • I love Pampers swaddlers and have a son. We are having another boy and I plan to use the same brand again. The others just didn't absorb as much.
  • I have 3 sons currently and pampers have worked much better for us than Huggies (we get nothing but leaks with Huggies in the early months). I think it's more about how the kid is built and such. Some fit differently through the legs and top

  • I used primarily Pampers Swaddlers and Target brand with DS, so that's what I'll be trying this time around for DD. If they don't work, I'll just try something else!
  • Huggies leaked on DS EVERY TIME. We've stuck with Pampers. I usually stock up when Toys R Us has a big coupon and combine it with a pampers coupon.
  • Huggies always leaked for DS. EXCEPT, when he was old enough to start wearing overnights. Huggies overnights are great! For daytime though, I use Pampers- swaddlers when he was younger and now cruisers. My sister said Luvs worked on my niece but not my nephew. May have to give them a try with baby girl since they are cheaper than most!

  • Interestingly enough, Huggies didn't work as well with my son. I had way more leaks when he was in Huggies than other brands. Target brand and Pampers Baby Dry were my favorites

  • We actually didn't end up with a preference. I've tried pretty much every brand of diapers on DS, and only had issues when he was due for the next size up. I've never been sprayed, but DH was twice. I found that if I made sure to wait at least 10/15 minutes after he drank anything, I wasn't at risk to get hit with pee.

I'm going to be investing in all-in-ones soon. I'm hoping it won't be an issue when LO gets here.

Side note, going to use disposable until cord falls off... Any notes from STM's on about how many disposables we are looking at? I want to be prepared with NB's and 1's when the time comes, in case LO is a bigger baby... And can you return unopened packages of diapers? I'll donate them if not, but money back is always nice...
  • Pampers swaddlers worked for my newborns, but switched to huggies after size 2/3. As for cloth, pocket diapers worked for DD1, but not for DS. We used prefolds with covers on him. I ended up really liking the prefolds, so we use them exclusively with DD2.

I think I remember it being about 2 weeks? Assume 8-12 diapers a day at the age, so somewhere around 140 diapers would likely be enough. I'd get one big box of each (usually around 120 for little sizes depending on brand) and then be ready to run for an extra little pack if needed.

Me too, planning to use disposables until the cord falls off since they have the kind with the nice little cut out, so thanks for your question!!

You should be good with AIOs especially because you can always add an extra insert or soaker if you want, like for overnight. (And then I learned just fiddle with the placement, closer to front for boys, more in the middle for girls.) p.s. I'd be lost without YouTube videos on cloth diapering!

Depending on the size of your LO, you may not need any newborn diapers or only 1/2 jumbo packs. DS1 was tiny and was in newborns for what seemed like forever, while my friend's son skipped them all together. I'd get maybe 2 jumbo packs of newborn and then do the rest in size 1. The sizes overlap, so even if your LO can fit in the newborns, the 1s shouldn't be too big on them.

  • @Knottie9983816 just a thought, might be totally invalid since DH won't even try cloth diapering, but will you want a few diapers left over anyway in case you need to travel? My sisters who have CD'd used disposables when they weren't home (rare) just because they didn't have anywhere to soak them. Also, my mom provides her own diapers so it was convenient.

Forgive me if that was dumb, I really have no idea what options are available for outside the home for those who CD.

Tbh we really don't ever travel. Ever. If we do we'll just use a wet bag to store them in until they can be washed. I guess if we end up having to go out of state or something we'll get a pack of disposables then? The plan is to have between 24-36 so we should have a pretty good "stash" for traveling.
  • We used pampers swaddlers with my son when he first born and still use them now at 22 months. I think it's different per child not per sex.

I never got pee in my face. My son mostly peed on his own face. Haha! ;)

I once took flats and covers on vacation with my third? baby. They're so thin that it didn't even matter that the washing machine was broken, I washed them in the bathtub at night and used them again the next day.
A warning about leaving them in a wetbag- as the urine breaks down into ammonia, it can totally eat holes in the diapers. A weekend trip will be fine in the short run, but could decrease the overall life of your diapers.
