Baby movement... Pain?

Hey all!

I have tried looking around to see if this has been asked before, but had no luck- sorry if this is a repeat!

I am 14 weeks this Saturday and for the past few days I have been feeling something in my lower abdomen. I know some of you have already started feeling your baby so wanted to ask what exactly it feels like.

I've heard the word 'flutter' being thrown out a lot, but this felt almost more like a pain that moved. On a 1-10 scale maybe a 2, so I guess more of an discomfort really. It was definitely not gas pains or anything I have ever felt before.

Could that 'pain' be the baby moving or should I be calling my OB to see if something is wrong?

Re: Baby movement... Pain?

  • It could be round ligament pain (rlp), which I believe are sharp like pains, like I get them when I sneeze, and sometimes when I get up. Not so weird to have sharp quick pains.

  • The only time I've ever experienced baby movement that was painful was towards the end of my pregnancy when baby is big and strong and out of room. I would say as long as there is no bleeding and the pain goes away it's probably nothing to worry about

  • This is my first pregnancy, so I can't help you out in the "how does it feel when baby moves" department. However, every now and then I have some slight twinges and random pains in that area. It doesn't last long and isn't severe. I'm chalking it up to my uterus stretching and making room.
  • This is my first pregnancy and I have been curious to what it feels like. I also get twinges and slight pain. I think it is my uterus stretching pressing against all my other organs and stuff lol. I've been waiting to feel movement but I always heard first time moms don't feel anything until later in pregnancy. :disappointed:

  • From my experience it definitely doesn't hurt, especially in the very early weeks. It feels like a fish is wiggling in side of you, or maybe a light tickle like a finger is lightly tickling you. Not a pain.

  • Baby movement shouldn't hurt. Not unless you're close to the end and baby is kicking you in the ribs. Or when they kick what feels like the opening of your vagina. Movement right now would be a very light bubble type feeling. The pain may be round ligament pain or sharp gas. I have gas pains I've never experienced before when I'm preg. And in places I wouldn't expect. If it gets really bad and doesn't seem usual to you, I'd call the dr.

  • I agree, that baby movement won't hurt until the end, when the baby is kicking your ribs or something. But there are a lot of random pains all throughout pregnancy, not related to baby movement.
  • I had weird sharp pain today intermittently. I figure it's just RLP. PP seem to have legit info on what the first twinges would actually feel like. Very helpful!
  • Sounds like RLP. I'm STM and feel odd "bubbles" this early on where baby would be. Pain isn't going to happen until much later. If it hurts, drink some water and lay down until it passes.

  • Thanks everyone! It hasn't gotten worse so it is probably just round ligament pains like many of you suggested. If it happens more frequently or gets worse I will def be calling my OB!
  • I'm also wondering what movement would feel like. I've been feeling some pain too from RLP but tonight (15 weeks) I felt like what can only be described as a tickle, like brushing a finger against my skin from the inside. Any STM, is this like "flutters" I keep hearing about?
  • I've had pain too. I'm 15 weeks Monday and today I've had one specific area on my lower belly that has a sharp 2/10 pain like described that lasts maybe ... 10 seconds most and then goes away. It's happened a few times today. I'm wondering what it is considering when this happens I'm usually not moving and just sitting so I notice it more and from what I've experienced and read so far.. Round ligament isn't necessarily when your not moving or stretched wrong etc. like Pp's have said... I've just chalked it up to growth in there etc so far. Sorry I'm not of anymore help... Im a FTM as well.

This sounds like legit baby movement. The first time I ever felt my son was 16 weeks on the nose and felt what can be explained as being flicked, but from the inside. It was a distinctive hard kick. Then I didn't feel him again for a couple weeks so don't freak if you feel nothing for a while. Yesterday at 14+3 I had two distinctive pops in my lower abdomen. I'm positive it was baby. Haven't felt anything since.

  • I agree with @NLewis1 mine always felt like someone was flicking me lightly from the inside, usually 3 or 4 times fast. Not really a brushing feeling.. Although you can def feel their little heels brush against you when they get bigger. I'm sure every mother experiences something slightly different though.

  • So, I may be crazy. I'm probs crazy, Bc it seems really early (13+5) and I just assumed I wouldn't feel anything until a month from now as a FTM, but I think I felt baby movement today during a meeting. It was 2-3 quick light 'pops'. Only way I can describe it.

I've got lots of gas (especially lately, poor DH) but this felt just different enough that I was like 'what was that' after the first one and trying to figure it out when the second came. I 'felt' it a little higher than where I thought the baby was given my last scan, but hard to tell since I was sitting with bad posture. I don't even blink at the more typical gurgles anymore.

STM: Am I crazy? Too early or maybe legit? Totes didn't come back and probably won't for a while. Lol.

I've heard the reason FTMs take longer to feel baby is because they don't know how to distinguish baby from bowel. Some women can feel ovulation and implantation and I think that gives them an upper hand on detecting if movement is baby or not, as a FTM. As a STM, they know for sure what baby feels like so they can detect it sooner.

I'd say you legit felt baby!!!
  • My early baby movement with DS felt like worms moving inside me.

  • @likeabel I have no clue what worms feels like. That sounds not as fun as the pop. :)

    @CopperLane thanks lady!!

Really? Weird. I hate worms, they creep me out. I guess I have that to look forward to!

  • @HBMama2B and @samsonator yeah, my OB looked at me like I was crazy too! It was only a few weeks of that and then I started feeling actual kicks. Someone else described it as a fish flopping around. Just something little wiggling out of control!
