1st Trimester

Eating healthy, loosing weight

I've always been a pretty big yo-yo-er, bouncing around about 10lbs, all within my healthy weight range, I had settled around the middle of my range right before conceiving.  I'm not sure if Baby T is giving me the motivation I need or if my appetite is decreased or what (no nausea yet) but I've been eating healthier and getting a little walking in, which of course is great, but I've lost a few pounds, which usually right up front is water weight.  But I am concerned that I may continue to loose weight, which of course is not good in pregnancy.  How do you balance eating  healthy with maintaining weight, or those that do eat healthy, any tips on getting the calories in?

Re: Eating healthy, loosing weight

  • Lots of women lose a few pounds by eating healthier and exercising more during pregnancy. Generally, this is good for baby (so long as you aren't dieting). Truthfully, there isn't a need for much weight gain during the first trimester so I wouldn't worry too much. If your weight loss becomes an issue, your doctor will definitely speak up. Eat when you are hungry! There is nothing wrong with eating healthy, but don't restrict. If you find that the weight is coming off too much, ease up on your exercise routine and eat foods that are healthy but nutrient and calorie dense -- healthy fats (avocado, olive oil), lean meat protein, peanut butter, etc. Opt for whole grain carbohydrates as well. Eat lots of veggies! I think you will be fine :)

  • Your body is working hard making a baby, which takes more calories. That combined with your better eating an exercising habits may be the reason you're losing weight. Don't worry about it until your doctor does.

  • Your doctor will speak up if its an issue. My doctor didn't bat an eye when I dropped 10 lbs between my confirmation appointment (5 weeks) and my 10 week appointment, just asked if I could keep fluids down and moved on. Especially in the first trimester, the baby is super tiny and doesn't need much extra calorically. As long as you are a healthy weight and are taking a prenatal, they'll draw what they need from you. Don't worry until your doctor does.
  • Agree with PP, don't worry until your doctor does. I lost quite a few pounds during first tri and didn't gain anything during second. It's all coming now in third tri. I wouldn't "diet" but just make sure you're eating healthy foods. No pop or fast food...basically all the good stuff lol.
