Food Guilt Big Time!

edited December 2015 in June 2016 Moms

I am just a bundle of positivity on this board, ain't I? Lol so unfortunately in this pregnancy, I've been EXTREMELY sick since day 1. I find that for some odd reason, I am able to hold down things that I shouldn't be eating; Breakfast burritos with chorizo and potato and lots of hot sauce, Chinese Food, Tacos, Curly Fries/Ranch Fries etc... and the few times I've tried to eat salad or vegetables or fruit, I get sick. Fruit has been hit and miss and I can tolerate broccoli, but everything else makes my throat tighten. I've tried to drink milk and every time it came up. Eggs? Forget about it. It seems like the only thing I can stomach is food with no nutrition whatsoever and I hate it. No seriously, I hate it.

I feel guilty because I keep eating fast food and empty calories and I feel like I'm depriving my baby of nutrients. I haven't gained weight yet because I throw up a ton but I'm worried also that it will catch up if my appetite doesn't straighten out. Did anyone else have this problem? Is it a matter of willpower? What should I do?

  • Don't worry about it. It'll resolve itself soon enough and you can go back to eating better. You're not depriving your baby of anything; the nutrients your baby needs are found in your body already, and more likely you're just depriving yourself of nutrients for the time being. Try to keep down some prenatal vitamins and just do your best. It doesn't matter how much spinach you cram down your throat if it all just comes right back up.

  • Exactly! I had to go to the hospital for vomiting and I told them I couldn't hold down food and they just kept saying, "Oh make sure you eat healthy and eat better."

I thought the same thing: what good is it really if it comes up 5 seconds later? Lol

  • Like PP said, just eat what you can right now and take your prenatals. After this passes and you hit second and third tri you can focus on healthy foods again. I'm at a point where I have to snack almost all day to prevent myself from getting sick and none of those snacks are healthy. I can't eat a full meal. But in a couple weeks it will (hopefully) all go back to normal.

  • I wouldn't stress about this.  Eat what you can keep down, calories (even those that aren't full of vitamins) are better than none.  So long as you are getting your prenatal vitamins, baby should be fine for now.  One thing that helped with fruit and veggies for me, by the way, is juices.  I juice those suckers (kale, carrots, lime, oranges, apples, berries, etc.) and they taste great but the texture of chewing on them sometimes does not...not sure why, just is what it is.
  • Make sure you keep your prenatal down and get calories in however you can. At this point your baby can pull whatever else it needs from your system. Fx-ed you feel better in the next few weeks!
