1st Trimester

FTP - Definitely have questions!!!

Hello!

First of all, omg we are having a baby!!!!!!!!  My doctor had recently referred me to an infertility specialist since my hubby and I had been TTC for a year.  We had only been through a bunch of blood tests and were waiting for my period to come to have some tests to confirm if I had PCOS or not.  Low and behold, I got a BFP! Seriously, we are on cloud nine right now.

Anyway, I called my regular OB/GYN who had me schedule an appointment for when they estimate I am at 10 weeks.  I can't believe I have to wait that long to see our little baby!  Patience though, right??

All the doctor's office said was take pre-natals (I already am) and if I get sick, call first before I take any meds.  Got it!  There's got to be more though.  My mom had several miscarriages, so I obviously have that in the back of my mind.  I know no booze, extremely limited caffeine, no sushi, deli meats, etc.  Any advice on things I can do to keep our baby healthy and happy would be awesome!  Can I still keep going to the gym?

So. Many. Questions. So. Excited!!!!!

We have predicted our due date for the beginning of August.

  • Honestly, there's not much to do! Eat healthy, take a prenatal, and practice moderate exercise (anything you were doing pre-pregnancy should be fine, but never ignore a doctor's orders!). Walking is great, low impact exercise for pregnancy especially if you weren't very active beforehand.

  • You can still eat sushi and deli meats. Just live your life.
Yes, you can go to the gym. Just drink more water.
And grt yourself a pregnancy book. They will help with a lot.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • Thanks everyone!  I work out about 3 times a week, not super high impact, so I am going to stick with that for now until my doctor says otherwise. What an incredible journey!!!!

To touch on the part of your mother having several miscarriages- that does not necessarily have any bearing on whether you will have that struggle as well.  Miscarriages happen for any number of reasons and can happen at any time (not to be a downer) regardless of what you are or are not doing- even if you do everything perfectly.  My doctor told me with my first pregnancy, which later ended in MC at 8.5 weeks, that "pregnancy is not a disease"........I thought that was very rude at the time, but his point was that, especially in first trimester, you can literally do most everything you normally do that is considered to be healthy (like, dont do drugs or drink obv, eat total garbage, etc.).  As you progress your body will tell you when it's time to adjust things, like exercise, or need for naps or more sleep, more water, etc.  My point to all of this being- yes it is exciting, yes there are some things you need to do differently, but for the most part, you just have to keep going about your life and hopefully everything works out wonderfully at the end of your 9 months.

(I really hope this doesn't come off as negative or rude or whatnot, just my perspective with a dose of realism and a loss history).

I do a really high intensity form of yoga (lots of cardio, bending, jumping etc) and some of the girls take time off it during their first tri, but there is no reason to change your normal work out routine.  Emphasis on normal - don't introduce or increase anything.  My instructor for the course is currently in her third tri and still teaching - just as she has been since day one of her pregnancy.  You aren't going to jiggle the baby loose.

But obviously if you don't ever go the the gym don't start suddenly lifting weights now.  Long walks are good!
