The 1st of July. Jerk doctor would have gotten her wish without causing me all that pain, i'm certain!

  • 40w on the dot.

  • My first was induced at 37 weeks. The doctor gave me supposed medical reasons for it but I was young and took his word. A few years later I learned he was being sued by numerous patients because his inductions led to serious health problems for their babies. One of the mom's was on the show Montel Williams.
My second came on her own 6 hours shy of her due date.

I don't remember to the day, other than I was 32 weeks.  I had no symptoms of her coming, other than a small back ache 2 days before.  I had just contributed it to overdoing things that day, laid down with a heat pack and felt better.  2 days later my water broke and by time I got to labor and delivery, I had dilated 5.5 cm without a single contraction.  I have no recollection of BH contractions either.  Every time the dr asked me if I had any I simply said no, because I hadn't.  I had the injection to stop the labor which it didn't, then the steroid shot to help her lungs, and then I got the IV with Pitocin and shipped via ambulance to the next hospital where they had a NICU. By time I got there I was definitely feeling the contractions!  My water broke at 7pm, I had her at 4:35 AM.   3 lbs 13 oz. and 16.5 inches long.

Me too! In fact, I heard enough women saying that had happened to them, that I just decided I'm not consenting to vaginal exams before I'm in active labor (and even then I request that they be kept to a minimum, if at all.)

There's just no good reason to be poking around in there during the last weeks of pregnancy.

Wow, how scary to have no warning at all. Thank god it happened at 32 weeks and not any earlier than that. I've had 2 friends who lost their first because they went into unexpected labor like yours, except it happened at 22 and 24 weeks. So sad.
  • Went into labor 40+2, DD was born at 40+3! My water never broke- Doctor broke it for me after laboring for 15ish hours. I was convinced DD was a giant baby because I pushed for 3 hours and 17 minutes and was really struggling, but no, a tiny peanut of 6lbs 3oz!

  • My water broke and went into labor with my first at 36 weeks. No warning before that was getting ready to go work. Then contractions started. After 9 hours and my doctor leaving for vacation the next morning I was induced. 9 hours later had my daughter was born. She was healthy except a little jaindice and weighed in at 6 pounds 2 oz 17 inches long.

It was scary- I was just a mess when it happened. I was blessed she was marked to be a big baby- i measured 2 weeks ahead at my 26 week ultrasound to where the dr even changed my due date and according to the NICU doctor by then babies begin to triple their weight and she wouldve been a 9+ pound baby! I don't know if she would've survived if she was any smaller.

  • Thanks for sharing, ladies! No one made it to 43 weeks? ;) On my last BMB we had a mom whose firstborn was born 43 weeks. So few women are "allowed" to wait that long.

My water broke with my firstborn at 40 wks 3 days. I went into labor and finally gave birth 40 wks 5 days. Longest weekend of my life. :)

  • I don't know how to create the polls on this site, but it would be cool to do this for stm. That way, those on our second could compare first baby to second from those moms on baby 3+. And hopefully get excited that its going to go sooner/faster:-). Maybe that's just me.

Except there's already been a conversation about it and going sooner/faster definitely isn't always the case. ;)

  • My second labor was faster/easier than my first, but I went to 41 weeks pregnant with both.
  • Went into labor the evening of my due date but didn't give birth until 3 days later by csection.

Second labor was faster by 5 hours but I was 3 days overdue with him.

  • Right. Except I wasn't suggesting a conversation but rather a poll. And I think it's statistically proven they do move faster second time around way more times than not. Obviously, 2nd labor being faster/sooner wouldn't happen for every case. That would be impossible! ;-). So far we are 2/2 on moving faster! Yay. No poll, nbd, I'm already thrilled.

  • While my actual labors have gotten shorter my time spent pregnant has gotten longer.

  • My labor drastically got shorter with pregnancies. 1st was 18 hours, 2nd 7 hours and 3rd around 1 hour and almost didnt make to hospital.
  • @alligreer88 be careful what you wish for. ;) My second labor was shorter (that was almost a given since I labored for two days with DD) but it was a heck of a lot harder and more intense. My husband couldn't believe it when I said my first birth was easier, but it really was.

And my firstborn was born before my due date, my second came a week past. I was all ready to go at 37 weeks, everything done and ready because I was so certain that since it was my second I'd go early. Waiting another 4 weeks was tough. I think statistically you're right that labors tend to be shorter with your second though. How long was your first labor?
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • Woah, that is pretty a drastic reduction in labor time! My first was 28 hours long, and my second was 6. I thought 6 hours was ideal. Long enough that it never felt like things were progressing too quickly for me to mentally and emotionally process, but short enough that I wasn't close to begging someone to knock me over the head with a lead pipe and just cut the baby out already (that was my first labor. For the record, no one complied with my request and I managed to push my baby out without the assistance of knives, lead pipes, or pain meds.)

I'm hoping for another labor like my second.
  • It's really impossible to say how long my first really was, because it involved so much medication what would have naturally happened is impossible to tell. I was induced at 41 weeks, skipped cervidal even though I wasn't thinned or dilated what so ever. They claimed I was having contractions, which weren't enough for me to even know. I got pitocin for about 6 hours which concluded when for the 4th time babies heart rate (being internally monitored) was too low for too long because my contractions were on top of each other, baby wasn't getting a break. I think I got too much pitocin or couldn't tolerate it or something. I was only 3 centimeters. It was making my contract and want to push a baby out but I wasn't thinned at all. I ended up getting a shot to counter act what pitocin was causing to me and baby. They disconnected my epidural at the point. I started pushing 12 hours after pitocin started, born hour later. Nicu was in the hall as they thought baby had been deprived from oxygen/had low heart rate. My goal is no pitocin this time. It was either administed wrong or my body just didn't tolerate/wasn't ready or combo of all. My birth plan, no Pitocin. 10 lb baby, I tore and was cut a lot. I'm not sure if waiting it out to 41, 42 weeks is better, or induced at 40-42. My husband is big, we have big babies.
  • With my first labor contraction started on a Thursday which was the day after my EDD, but they tapered off after some time and was on and off until Friday morning when they got consistent and stronger. DS arrived Saturday evening. Hoping for a shorter birth this go around!
