Vent bc doctor's office sucks

Hi mommas. I just really really feel the need to vent and rant because I'm here at my 39 week appointment and I'm about to cry from frustration. My appointment time was 10:20, so I got here at like 10:05 or 10:10. It is now 11:15 and I am STILL sitting here waiting in the freaking lobby to be seen!

It should be illegal to keep a woman who is this severely pregnant and hormonal waiting like this. I feel like I'm just going to explode!

Thanks for letting me vent. Feel free to share your frustrations of the day, I'd love to hear them and be pissy with you.

*ETA: I also overslept this morning and didn't have time for breakfast before I left for the doctor's so yeah, that doesn't help one bit..... Cranky from waiting + hungry + 39 weeks pregnant = one angry momma

Re: Vent bc doctor's office sucks

  • Ugh last time I was there I waited for over an hour only to be rushed through the appointment! I totally under that doctors are busy but... There's gotta be a better way to schedule appointments!!

I agree. I've never understood why we wait for so long in the lobby when we only get to see the doctor for just a few minutes. It makes no sense to me.
  • This is just one of the many reasons I love birthing at home. Our midwife comes to our home for all of our appointments, so if she's running behind she just sends me a text to let me know and it's not a big deal because I can still get stuff done around the house!
  • While I'd hate waiting that long, it isn't so bad. When I was still living in New York I'd have an appointment in the morning to late morning and still wouldn't be seen for almost 4-5 hours every time. One time they even finished all their patients and left me for last even though my appointment was 3 hours before they even closed. I couldn't take it anymore and decided to move home cause it all seemed to risky since they barely ever relayed information to me about my pregnancy either.

All in all though I hope you get seen soon and don't have to wait much longer. I totally agree with the fact they should have snacks and water for us!!
  • @sharonholck28 that sounds terrible!!! How could they expect you to do that? Ridiculous. I shouldn't complain about my one hour then!
  • My dr.'s office is the same way (not the 4-5 hour way but bad!) I can't wait to switch after this pregnancy. Every time I go in and have to wait and then they rush me through, my blood pressure reads high. I love when they comment on it and I can bitchily say (ok in my head...) that it's all thanks to them. Grr.
  • My office is the complete opposite. They require you to be 15 minutes early or they won't see you. I'm always terrified of being late so I show up ridiculously early lol. My old office was the same way..I was 10 minutes early to an appt once and they noted on my next appt paperwork to arrive 15 min early. Its insane.
  • And the exam rooms are always stupidly hot! Just saying!
  • Ugggghhhhhh I feel your pain! I was left in an exam room for over an hour last week, under a fancy paper sheet from the waist down. I was the first appointment of the day (8AM). The nurse came in around 9 to let me know the Dr wasn't in yet and would be another 10 minutes.
  • @ammnam14  My rheumatologist was like that. I showed up 5 minutes before my appointment once, and I got a "talking to" from the nurse. But he was awful and I don't go to him anymore, so...

@amye02 That happened to me during my first pregnancy. I was about 16 weeks or so and I waited about an hour or so before the nurse came in and said "Oh, the doctor is late because she had to stay home with her sick son until she can find a babysitter." She showed up another half hour later and acted like nothing happened. By the time my next appointment came around, she had shuttered her practice and I had to find a new OB! (Which was the greatest thing ever, because my OB who delivered my first was FANTASTIC.
  • @sharonholck28 I had a fantastic ob/gyn office in Manhattan when I lived in the area. I never waited more than 30 mins & I loved all the drs & NPs there. So I think it was just that office that was bad. I'm in central jersey now & the office is pretty bad time wise. It does depend on who you are seeing, but often I wait a long time & then get rushed.
  • Mine used to be super fast. One time I showed up for my appointment 20 minutes early and I was in and out before my scheduled time. About two months ago it started getting really bad. I'm always waiting at least an hour in the waiting room and sometimes half an hour in the exam room, just to be rushed through my appointment. Once she left the room before I even had a chance to ask questions!
  • @mbecca11 the same exact thing happened to me Monday. My blood sugar dropped drastically and I was shaking. You may want to ask if they have some crackers or something.

I'm feeling frustrated with DH bc I asked him to help me clean up my lady bits and he shaved the whole thing bald before I realized what he was doing. I hate it!

I got hi-c from them once when I told them I needed to leave if I wasn't going to be seen soon since my blood sugar was dropping. I hate hi-c, (bleech!) but I drank it. They were all stonefaced when I first ask how much longer (it'd been hours) but when I said I was just asking b/c my blood sugar was dropping & I'd need to leave or I wouldn't be able to drive, they totally changed & became SO NICE! They gave me the hi-c and kept asking how I was doing & maybe it was coincidence, but I was called in about 5 mins later. They were probably more worried about liability than me, but I didn't really care!
  • My doctor just left me a voicemail asking me to call him to talk about the possibility of inducing me mid-week next week instead of the 21st (which would be 41 weeks). I'm due Monday. But seriously?? This is just a few days after he and I'd had a discussion about how it was silly to be induced or schedule a c-section for convenience earlier than necessary and he agreed that he would support me in having a natural birth without intervention! He said "the less I have to do, the better! I'm all for you going for it [non-intervention/drug-free birth]" I feel so betrayed!! :disappointed: I know he can't make me do anything I don't consent to...but still. Ugh! Why the sudden flip of opinion and support?
  • @ArielleRene that stinks! I'd call him and see why. Maybe he was making the appointment to induce & the hospital is really booked for the holidays? Or perhaps he has another legitimate reason why he's changed his mind? Good luck with that!
  • Well, he called my husband at 8:30 tonight. Haha. Apparently he read my chart wrong and wanted to induce THIS Monday, my due date, because of ["dietary managed", that he had said was probably not even accurate that it was on my record because I was probably a false positive] GD and one high bp reading (cos the nurse took my bp while getting me excited about having my first kid...I should have insisted she stop talking and re-check...). I basically said, no thanks, I'll wait til the 21st like we had originally planned.... He said he couldn't force me to get an induction, and he'd see me for my regular check up on Monday, but I'm bringing my mom with me to my appointment to help me not be super emotional and cry about it. I think he is legally obligated to give me that speech though, just cos of the GD on my record. Anyone who looks at me can tell, there is no way this baby is too big yet. I look like a 7 month prego lady... Anyway... Praying this baby comes this weekend!!!
  • @ArielleRene I totally understand! I'm 40+6 and I have been able to postpone the induction chat with my OB so far. I feel completely comfortable and I'd really prefer to go on my own. I've had two non-stress tests and a biophysical since my due date to make sure everything is okay; as long as they stay on top of the baby's health you should be given the opportunity to go into labor naturally. Good luck!

  • I have been greatly disappointed with the clinic we have to go to. Due to finances and insurance issues we are going to a low income family clinic. Appts are are all scheduled at one time and are in a first come first serve basis. My mom has told me that my expectations have been unrealistic because its not a private dr office. But regardless any patient should be treated a whole lot better than i have.

I've only had one sono at 20 weeks and when asked around 32 weeks if I'd be able to have another one i was told "probably not, it would just be looking at the baby and there is no info to do it." I was floored. Why would i not want to look at my baby. Also at every appt (which last all of 5 minutes or less) i barely get to hear her HB and when i ask what it was he'll respond oh it's in the 140's never an exact. And the lastest disappointment is i didn't get to meet the dr this past week that will be doing my c and recieved a call yesterday that she is unavailable for next weeks appt. She was supposed to be scheduling it then. So now i have to the same dr and he'll send my infoto her office to do the scheduling. So here i am 37+5 and still have no date for my repeat c.

Sorry for the long post, figured this was the best thread to vent about my crappy drs office.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm at a private practice & they typically only do 2 ultrasounds @ 7 & 20. They'll do others for cause, (AMA, short cervix, etc) but not routinely. Also same with the heartbeat, half the time the dr is talking to me while she's doing it, so I'm distracted & barely hear it & most of them don't tell me what it is unless I ask, it's always "140" once "150" never "143" so I think it's a ballpark #. I just wanted to let you know I hear you & that these parts of your healthcare are typical & might not be any different if you were paying through the nose for insurance & medical bills like we are! That said, if I have another pregnancy, I'm looking for another practice, one that has midwives as well after my time here on the bump!

@jennclee I think you're probably getting close to normal care like @LMJL said.

I've had great (Canadian) care including midwives. And this is all really normal to me - it's good not to need an ultrasound after 20 weeks! No reason = no medical reason. They're not supposed to send you without a valid indication (aka reason) regardless of what you pay. They won't send you just to see your baby though.

A ballpark HR is also a normal thing to hear. Usually anyone's heart rate fluctuates a little anyway during the test.

Not meeting the doc must be frustrating, and I can see how that's disappointing. But I know even if you pay you still deal with that kind of thing too. So maybe that is because of the clinic or maybe you got a flaky doc or her kid got sick or something.

But it sounds like you're getting pretty standard (good!) care overall.

I agree with pp about this. My first ptegnancy was "normal" so I only had the typical 12 wk US and the 20 wk US. (Canadian also) I saw the nurse more than the OB and always got a ball park heart rate. I never met the man who actually deliver this baby because my OB wasn't on call when I went into labour, but it was his partner that was. (Which I think is very common).

Second pregnancy, I kept losing weight and my fundal height was always smaller than it should be. Same doc as first pregnancy and I had an ultrasound after each visit after around month 5. Just to check baby's size, which always came back normal. Same doc delivered baby#2! (Not my OB).

Third pregnancy and went with midwives. 20 wk US showed placenta was really low so that meant a follow up at 32wks. They also only ever give a range for heart rate and are amazing. I have an hour at each appointment. At 36 wks has been measuring a month ahead for servers like appointments and we went for a size check US.

Moral of the story: I have yet to have my own doc deliver my baby, I have yet to have an exact heart rate, I've only received extra US when there is an issue to require one. They will NEVER give extra just for fun. I believe there are still questions on how safe they are to begin with to add to it all! I think you're getting pretty standard care here. Don't stress, soon you'll have your baby in your arms!
  • Just to follow up.... Had my appointment yesterday and it went well. My mom was with me, and it worked! Because she was there, Doctor didn't try to scare me. Unless something crazy happens, it sounds like he's going to let me go to 42 weeks before induction!
