Has anyone talked to their dr about protein powder?

Hi all! A friend of mine told me that protein powder is not safe to have during pregnancy. I find a lot of conflicting things online, and my powder doesn't say anything about a warning for pregnant women. I forgot to ask my dr about it the other day. Has anyone asked their dr about this and/or have an answer/ opinion on the matter?

Thanks!!

  • I don't know but if there are conflicting opinions I would not use it.

  • I have the same question!  I'm asking my doctor next week and will update then.  From what I researched, soy based protein may not be the healthiest.  Keep us updated if you get any other info too!
  • I know that when I took in some of my advocare products, the doctors were fine with them. They are dairy based.

  • Thanks guys! I use gold standard whey so I'll ask him my next appt the 21st!
  • I think if you take a raw whole food protein such as Vega or Raw Meal it would be fine as those are not made with synthetic vitamins and junk your body can't actually absorb.
  • I always thought the issue with drinking protein shakes while pregnant was the amount of protein in them. I'm seriously missing my Vegan Raw chocolate peanut butter breakfast shakes, but the product (as with any of the others I looked at) all say not to use while pregnant or breastfeeding :(
  • @Ya Never Know I'm so confused now, I've still been having them ocassionally as o figured more than ever I need protein and I'm vegetarian and struggle to eat enough protein. I suppose I shouldn't have any more shakes then! Hard to find a conclusive answer
  • I have been using a meal replacement shake for months now and will continue to use it going forward, but more as a healthy snack. I'm an NP and have done my own research on it and it's safe. FYI, you should probably be getting 80-90g of protein daily while pregnant (per Dr. Breyer's pregnancy diet, which I am following). They just don't recommend protein shakes due to the fact that it's not "real food". However, I will be continuing to use my healthy shakes because they work for me.

  • Thanks ! I eat plenty of protein as it is but ALWAYS use shakes after my workouts. Mine doesn't say any warning about being pregnant on it. Who knows
  • It depends on the type of protein it is. I drink Shakeology daily and it actually replaces my prenatal vitamin (I just take some extra folic acid) per my MW.

  • I use "Mamalicious" It's a prenatal and protein shake.

If you are worried about it maybe switch to one of those? There are several. I like this one because there are no artificial sweetners. A lot of them have stevia. Yuck.

It's milk and soy based so we are safe. I would be lost without my protein.
  • @lagard88 woohoo thank you!!
  • There should be a warning on the tub advising pregnant women not to take it. My dr confirmed to stop taking all supplements other then my prenatal vitamins.
