High-Risk Pregnancy

Velamentous cord insertion (VCI)

So I just found out at my last scan that I have a VCI, it is an abnormal condition where the umbilical cord is not inserted in the proper location to the placenta. The exposed vessels are not protected by Wharton's jelly and are vulnerable to rupture. So obviously this is a bit scary but my doctor said it wasn't anything to worry about and is more common than I think. But using google I found some scary stuff and am probably worrying myself more than I should. I'm a FTM and 26w4d currently. So I was just wondering if anyone else out there has the same condition or has previously had it in other pregnancies and what your experience was?

Re: Velamentous cord insertion (VCI)

  • I had velamentous cord insertion with my 3rd and there had been concern that I also had vasa previa. The vasa previa resolved itself and I was able to deliver vaginally.

  • Hi!! My girls are 18 wks, and at 17 wks Baby B was diagnosed with VCI. The doctor didn't seem too concerned even though there is even the possibility that there is twin-to-twin transfusion going on, as well. All that he said was that they would keep a close eye on me and send me to a specialist of need be. The first two days after the diagnosis were TERRIBLE. I worried constantly, cried all the time, and thought my girl was doomed. BUT at the end of the day, stressing doesn't help anything! If your doctor isn't freaking out, there's nothing for you to freak out about! Just use extra precaution, eat as much as possible, take deep breaths, and rest frequently!! The only thing you can do for your baby at this point is to love them and take care of the vessle they're depending on! I wish you and your baby the best!!
  • By the way- I'm a FTM as well, so I know it's scary, but you're already over halfway there!!!!
