GTKY- christmas cookie season

The first giant tray of Christmas cookies arrived in my office this morning and at 9:30 here I sit shoving my face with them.

What are your favorite cookies, do you have family traditions revolved around cookie making? Do you have a recipe that you would like to share?

My favorite cookies are the peanutbutter ones with the hersheys kiss in the middle, sugar cookies with frosting and ones that my mother makes that are chocolate sour cream cookies- I don't know how to describe them but they are so delicious and I could eat an entire batch of those.

I have sister who is three years older than me and she and my mother are very into the traditional "family" image of the holidays. Probably because they cared so much I rebelled against it especially as a pre-teen and teenager. I don't necessarily rebel against it now, but I don't go out of my way to act different around the holidays. We used to do a day of cookie making the three of us and my sister used to decorate every single one of her sugar cookies using paint brushes and tweezers so that she could make them as beautiful as possible. They truly were beautiful, but since I was such a little jerk I would just slap the icing on and pour some sprinkles and be done with it and want to leave. I remember them being so frustrated with me but also trying so hard not to be mad because it would ruin the happy family picture they wanted. I'm half laughing and half crying remembering it- must be the hormones.

Re: GTKY- christmas cookie season

  • My favorite are chocolate cherry ones, made with maraschino cherries, powdered sugar and butter, and chocolate chips.

  • My favorite are peanut butter cup cookies.
Every year I get together with my mom, sister, aunts, and cousins to spend a whole day baking. In fact, we just did our cookie baking Saturday. Now the hard part will be not eating too many (wouldn't want to go to my next appt having gained 10lbs. Haha)

  • I am in the mood to just bake any and everything I can find on pinterest. I found some easy shortbread cookies, sugar cookies, rolo pretzles! I want them allllll!
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • I'm not so much a cookie person but I do fudge every year and fill tins with different kinds and give them out. I didn't have my mom growing up so I had to teach myself and missed the cookie tradition
  • I don't do anything to celebrate christmas or other holidays, but I do love cookies! My favorite to make (and eat) are snickerdoodles :)
  • Growing up we always did the cutout sugar cookies with the sprinkles and whatnot.  I carried it on for awhile then switched to a sour cream cutout that required frosting.  I've since ditched those too lol.

Every year I go over my parents house and me and my mom bake cookies.  I do most of the mixing and she follows behind me cleaning up...it works out quite well :)

I usually make Snickerdoodles, Molasses Sugar Cookies, Spritz cookies (red, green and white dough), coconut jam thumbprints, Russian teacakes and chocolate chip for my dad lol.  I feel like there's another one too that I'm forgetting.  I may cut back on some of them this year but we'll see.  Cookie making day is set for Dec 18th :)

  • I do not discriminate against cookies; I love them all.
  • Since college I make a bunch of cookies every year to give trays to grandparents, coworkers, and friends. I use to try a cookies exchange with all my DHs cousins wives and my SILS for a fun tradition that we could all get together. However the past two year everyone is so grumpy about it and it ruins my Christmas spirit. So now I just do it with 2 of them and have a girls night.
Also now my mom come over and we bake for like two days straight, which will be this weekend
I don't have a favorite cookies but my moms sugar cookie snowmen are awesome. I usually switch up the cookies I make so it's different eveyyear. Plus with Pinterest there are sooo many recipes to try.
This year I'm making white chocolate cherry, sugar cutouts, peanut butter balls, rum sticks, mint choc chip, and prbly some more.
I will say I'm a messy baker and drive my mom and hubby insane but I love it
  • Cookies are kind of a huge deal in my family and DH's family. My family had done an annual cookie swap every year since I can remember. My grandma did it when I was little but my aunt has done it for the past 15 years. It's always been the first weekend of December until this year. My aunts youngest's birthday is then so now it's always the second Saturday in December. I've missed it the past 3 years so I'm super excited to go this weekend.

My mom always makes the cut out sugar cookies. But the best ones are the jam creamettes. They are these light flaky cookies that are almost like a fluffy pie crust only their sweet. Then you put red current in them and sandwich them. I could eat them all. They are so good!

DH's family gets together every year to make cookies...well all the women do. They make these buttermilk drop sugar cookies that put all other sugar cookies to shame lol. They are so good! Then peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin rolls, peanut butter balls and coconut balls. They make several dozen of everything and I usually spend our Christmases with them stuffing my face with cookies and treats lol
  • I love baking but I am more of a cupcake person. I recently made some mint chocolate chip cupcakes with mint filling and homemade mint icing. I ate a lot of Andes mints in the process!

  • Oh @BabySeaTurtles those cupcakes sound amazing, I love mint/choc anything. You have me drooling
  • I love Russian Teacake Cookies, sugar cookies, and peanut butter chocolate no-bake cookies. Mmm now I feel like baking! :)

Oh my gosh Russian tea cakes!!! I've been trying to remember what those are called all week! My sister has a banging recipe for them that I wanted to ask her for and couldn't remember what they were called! Thank you! Also they are one of my favorites!!!
  • I love cookie season. I am a classic Chocolate Chip girl, but my mom makes these cookies called Sun Buckles with these really old cookie tins that you arent allowed to wash. They're pretty amazing.
  • I love all cookies!!!! We do have a family tradition cookie it's called "green things" over the years people have turned them into wreaths and holly leaves or family has called them green things for the past 50+ years so we stick with what we know. They are like rice crispy treats but green and made with corn flakes and red hots. One weekend either end of November or beginning of December the women in our family young and old or whoever is near each other get together and spend one afternoon baking cookies. Everything from green things to sugar cookies to chocolate dipped peanut butter ritz sandwiches. Oh it gets good. Then we divide them up and takes home our share of the loot. It's such a fun thing we do and we happened to do ours last weekend and I'm happy to report lots of cookie action at my house.
  • Yum! Love Christmas cookies. Here's a plateful that I made for a neighbor from our cookie day this Monday. Tried a couple new recipes this year that turned out well!

  • The ladies on my mom's side get together almost every year for a "girls' candy making day". We do everything from toffee and brittle, to fudge, cookies, etc.

I'm not a big cookie decorator, but plan to do sugar cookies with LO this year when we put the tree up (this weekend).

I've been testing out a lot of new cookie recipes lately and keep telling my husband it's "so I know what recipes to use for the holiday cookie tray this year". That might be a lie. I haven't decided if I will do cookie trays this year ;)
