she stopped taking a bottle :(

Our baby recently started refusing bottles. She's as almost 8 weeks old. We have tried Dr. Browns, Mam and munchkin latch nipples. She took all 3 of them a week ago. Looking for advice please. Mom was really looking forward to the first date night out since we had her and now we can't. Help.

Re: she stopped taking a bottle :(

  • What exactly does she do. My LO is doing the same thing occasionally. When you introduce the bottle she becomes restless and starts to punch her arms and legs. She becomes quite restless and fussy while drinking. I was thinking it could be reflux that she's been taking all of the right medication and even rice cereal.
I Was hoping that it was just something that will get better with time and that maybe her G.I. system is still developing. I'm using Dr. Browns bottle ... Let me know if you find anything out !

  • She sucks on it for a second and gets pissed and kicks her arms and legs, starts screaming and crying and then won't stop. Hopefully it stops before I have to go back to work!!

  • My girl has been doing this as well. I find that she really needs to be hungry enough to take the bottle. Also making sure it's at the right temperature, body temperature or slightly above. I also noticed that my frozen milk has a soapy smell - likely high lipase amounts. She will usually end up drinking it finally after fussing a lot. However yesterday my husband gave her a bottle of milk I had pumped earlier and she drank it with little problem. Good luck I know how annoying it can be!
  • Have you tried a higher flow nipple? She may be used to a stronger flow and getting frustrated. Moving from preemie nipples to level one helped us.
  • I agree with the PP, try a different teat. My LO has been doing this and we've been experimenting with different teats until we found one she's happy with. I'm currently using the newborn MAM teats on the Dr Brown bottles as the formula she is on was too thick for the Dr Brown teats and she was getting frustrated at how slow the flow was. We tried the 2 month MAM teats but I think the flow was too fast for her with these as the milk was just drooling out the sides of her mouth. We also tried the medium flow Dr Brown teats but she seemed frustrated at them also. It's all (expensive) trial and error.
  • Maybe she is just boycotting the bottle for the breast because she prefers it. I had the hardest time getting my kiddo to take the bottle to start with, even now it's baby steps everyday but we are finally making some progress. We tried every darn bottle out there it seemed but finally she's taking the kiinde bottle.
  • Try the Minbie bottles. You can choose different flow teats. I love them. My DD had latching issues due to being a preemie and I was using the DR Brown preemie bottles but was still working with a LC to try and get her to eventually nurse. The LC suggested the Minbie bottles because they require the same latch/suck as breastfeeding. We switched to Minbie bottles and within the next week she started to successfully breastfeed. She easily goes back and forth from breast to bottle with them.
