2nd Trimester

Low placenta

I just had my 18 week ultrasound and everything was fine with the baby (thankfully) but the nurse called and told me, my placenta hasn't moved. She didn't go into much detail other then I need to have it re checked in January. I see my doctor on December 30th, but my nerves are getting the best of me. Has anyone been in a similar situation before?

Re: Low placenta

  • Yes. It's very common. Usually they have moved when rechecked. Worst case scenario you will have to have a c-section.

  • They rechecked me until 28 weeks or so and by then all was well. Hope it resolves for you!

  • Hey, I was actually put on bed rest at 8 weeks because my implantation was so low, which translates to a super low placenta. They were worried about full placenta previa, in which the placenta fully covers your cervix. I was rechecked at 13 weeks and everything looked way better so I was able to get off bed rest! Now I've just got partial placenta previa and my doctors are confident that the placenta will move up before I reach full term. They will recheck everything again at my Anatomy Scan at 20 weeks.

I don't think a low placenta is anything to worry too much about when you're still pretty early in your pregnancy.
  • Mine was found at 13 weeks, then again at 20 it was still low but it was moving in the right direction, they are checking again at 31 weeks but they told me they expect to see it far enough away from my cervix that I won't need to worry.

I know your situation is a little different since they didn't see movement in the right direction yet, but at 18 weeks the sizeable  growth hasn't started yet that pulls it up (that is at least my understanding, I'm no Dr).

I'm a big fan of trying not to worry until a Dr tells me to- it's easier said than done, but the majority of the time things are just fine so I just trend my thinking towards "everything is going to work out fine for me and for baby"

  • @adaytomaria - I know it sounds scary, but I promise it isn't as bad as it sounds! My doctor told me yesterday my placenta is very low, too. He told me that in almost every case he has seen like it, as the uterus expands, it pulls the placenta up out of the way. He said actually having a case of placenta previa is very very rare and I shouldn't worry about it until much much later if things haven't changed. And I talked to quite a few friends who had or knew someone who had the same diagnosis early on and every one of them said it resolved on its own.

You've still got plenty of time. I wouldn't worry yourself over it at this stage. Just try to focus on what you can do to be healthy and happy. Good luck!
  • Mine was found to b low at 20 wk us. I am now 32 wks 5days and it has not moved. Definitely getting a cs as doc does not think it will move from here on out. He is not worried at all though. I go twice a wk for us and non stress tests. So I feel at ease being so closely watched. Hang in there.
  • Last pregnancy, they found my low lying placenta at 20 weeks. I believe they move 90% of the time. I was told no sex and no heavy lifting or straining with a BM. I was checked every 4 weeks or so and nothing changed. I expected a c-section, but they sent me to the perinatologist at 34 weeks and it had just moved enough that I could have a vaginal birth.

Because I asked at my NT scan, they have already told me my placenta looks low this time around, but I guess it can take up half of the perimeter of the uterus at this time, so they won't tell me anything definitively until 20 weeks.

Even if it doesn't move, as PP said, it just means a scheduled c-section. Don't worry about it.

  • I also have a low lying placenta. Found out at my 18 week appointment. The doctor scheduled me for another sono at 22 weeks to check to see if it moved with the uterus. She stressed not to worry about it because most of the time it fixes itself.
  • Same boat, I had my anatomy scan a couple weeks ago at 18 weeks or so and they said I have a low placenta. The doctor who came in to talk to me after my u/s and my obgyn both said it's ok to keep doing what I was doing with sex and working out although my obgyn was initially on the fence but then called me later and said it was ok to do both. I go back mid February to check again and hopefully that bad boy has moved!
  • Yes, I had this with my first. Found out at my 20 week ultrasound. Had another ultrasound at 34 weeks and it had moved by then.

  • Update to my previous post: in the month since my last ultrasound, mine moved completely out of the way. So definitely don't stress yourself over it too much!!
  • I'm getting re-checked on Wed. Crossing my fingers!
