Cyst on Ovary

So I had my NT scan the other day and everything with baby (possibly a girl!!!) looked great. The tech mentioned she saw a cyst on my right ovary (about 2cm) and said it was probably nothing to worry about, she would just record it. Anyone else ever have this before and what happened?

Re: Cyst on Ovary

  • I get cysts on my ovaries all the time. If you're 12 weeks it could be the corpus Lutuem hasn't fully gone away yet? I'm not sure when it fully falls apart but if so, everyone gets one when they get pregnant. Besides that though, cysts are totally normal as long as they're looked at (and even when they're not) they're usually fine. Women get them all the time and don't even know, just like you wouldn't have if you didn't happen to have an ultrasound. I only notice mine because they get large and very painful and everything still checks out fine and they fall apart.

  • I have PCOS so I have all sorts of cysts on my ovaries.  It's nothing to worry about for the most part.

  • Yes, I have PCOS, and have experienced a lot of cysts. Sometimes they burst, but they usually resolve without too much discomfort. Last pregnancy, I had a really awful one. My OB was kind enough to remove it for me during my c-section.

If for some reason, you know you are going to get a c-section, you could always ask for it to be removed. But I would expect yours to resolve in its own, most likely before you have the baby.
  • I had a cyst develop adjacent my corpus luteum cyst earlier in my pregnancy. At less than about 4-6cm, doctors typically don't worry about cysts as they'll likely resolve on their own. If it's not hurting you, then no worries!
  • The doctor noted an endometrium cyst on my ovary at my first OB appointment. It had also been noted while trying to get pregnant. The doctor said they would monitor it, but it wouldn't affect the pregnancy and was nothing to worry about.

  • I was also told at 13 weeks that I have a cyst, but on my left ovary. The doctor doing the ultrasound said it shouldn't be anything to worry about. He said it can cause discomfort, but it should go away on its own. I know there is a small possibility when you get ovarian cysts that they can get larger and cause Ovarian Torsion. That seems rare though. I was told that they'd look at it again at the Anatomy Scan to see if there were any changes. I've never knowingly had an ovarian cyst before, although I am "borderline" PCOS.
