Growth Spurt...?

I've stopped waking my baby to eat since he gained back his birth weight, around 2 weeks. He is now 5 weeks old and the past couple of days I've noticed he has been going longer between feedings, sleeping alot, and not eating for as long at the breast. He is having enough diapers, but should I be concerned? It is possible to have a "growth spurt" where they sleep more? He seems fine, but I'm worried.

Re: Growth Spurt...?

  • Also, what's the longest he should go without eating at this age? Thanks!

  • Our lo is 6 weeks...he's sleeping for 2 hrs at a time and eating 3-4oz each feeding when he wakes up. Sometimes on a good day he sleeps 4 hrs without eating. I'd love to hear what others say as well
  • It could be a growth spurt but in my experience growth spurts lead to more eating and sleeping. I would let him sleep what he wants at this point. Typically they'll wake themselves and he's probably become more efficient at the breast so his feelings are less. My LO just turned 6 weeks and doesn't feed for nearly as long and has finally started spacing out some feedings more than an hour. He slept 5 hours four days ago or so and 6.5 last night. He ate a lot when he woke both times but he continues to have enough diapers so there isn't any concern for me.
  • It sounds like a growth spurt. I wouldn't be concerned as long as your baby is giving you plenty of wet and dirty diapers, isn't lethargic or "off." When babies go through a growth spurt they usually sleep more because growing is exhausting! And as your baby grows, he is more gets more efficient at eating and getting what he needs quickly.

We went through this at 5-6 weeks and again at 10.
