Mom hacks

Call me cheap, but I do not like to buy boxes of nursing pads.  I don't leak at all, but I use them because after every feeding I put APNO cream on my nipples.  One night I was upstairs and the pads were downstairs, I was half asleep so I just used two sheets of toilet paper and folded them, and used them as nursing pads.  Worked fine for me!  I will be doing this from now on.  Any hacks that you have discovered?  I am all about saving money... diapers are expensive!

You don't leak?? Girl, I'm SO jealous. It's the biggest thing that keeps me from really enjoying breastfeeding. We're still going strong, but I'll be damned if I don't leak pretty much every night and as soon as he starts nursing, the breast he isn't attached to always soaks my shirt. Hell, I leak if I even HEAR a baby, even on TV, or think about my son if I'm out and he's with my husband! Per the lactation consultant, it's because I have a natural oversupply and a heavy letdown, so I suppose of all the problems to have, too MUCH milk is one of the better ones, and since I have PCOS, I'm hopeful that the response to nursing means my hormones may have regulated enough that I won't need help getting pregnant with number 2, but I'd LOVE to not worry about what shirt I wear every time I go out, or know that even if my son isn't with me, I could still soak my shirt.

I have the same problem ... leak through my shirt at night even with thick washable pads (but usually only leak when baby sleeps 8-10 hours) and leak out the opposite boob that baby is nursing from. But I also have a great supply and strong, multiple letdowns, so I'll take the leakage!
  • Maybe I don't leak because I possibly have an under supply .I recently had to start supplementing .
  • Yep no way toilet paper would work for me. I figure nursing pads are affordable because of the money I'm saving exclusively BF. I've used coupons and caught them on sales thankfully. Oh and the cloth washable pads are the worst. They feel so gross once wet and then move and I end up with a wet stain. Wish I had good hacks to share.
  • I bought cloth diaper liners (fleece blend) and use them as washable nursing pads. They cost $6 and are designed to pull moisture away so they are super effective. I just fold them in thirds and they aren't bulky at all.
  • I use a baby facecloth folded twice between me and the washable breast pad with every feeding because so much leaks with letdown. I don't leak much in between, so one set of bamboobies lasts all day if I use the facecloth :) I have very few disposable products in my house (only toilet paper actually) and it saves so much money! Cloth diapers and breast pads, and bar mop cloths instead of paper towel.

  • I am on my fourth box of 100ct Lansinoh nursing pads. I leak so much and can't stand it. I've tried different kinds of reusable pads but i soak right through them. Toilet paper would not do anything for me.

  • I don't leak either! I thought it was just me, lol!

As far as cheap mom hacks, if you have Amazon Prime, Amazon Mom is free with your subscription. This gets you 20% off diapers & wipes (most brands)! And they are delivered to your door monthly (or however you set it up) for free.
  • I don't leak either, and I have oversupply and OALD! I guess I am lucky. I use my phone with white noise in the stroller when we go out and LO gets fussy. Works like a charm!
  • I use underwear liners sometimes  . I don't leak much tho.
  • I leak pretty good and decided to told a pump bottle under the other side. Got a good little covering. I use to soak pads as well or burp rags but for some reason I haven't had to use any lately. She has been getting up in the night for a extr feed. Growth spurt I suppose.

  • My baby was going through a wonder week and refused to nap. I tried everything - rocking him, his crib, his swing, his bouncy chair, but nothing worked. Finally, I bundled him up (we're in Canada), put him in the stroller, and walked him around our deck. I don't know if it was being outside or the movement, but he fell asleep immediately.
  • @jen83mn I use my yoga mat for tummy time too, same situation with a hardwood floor and rug. I also think he likes the texture.

I breastfeed my baby for every meal, but had heard that an ounce or two of formula before bed can help a baby sleep longer. It has worked for us, and since he doesn't use the formula for meals a small tin lasts us a while. It doesn't necessarily have to be formula, just an extra ounce or two before bed, called a "baby nightcap" works wonders, at least for our LO.

  • @jennsuzanne87, I second the couple ounces of formula right before bed. I was resistant to formula at first, but we started it and a week later, he was sleeping through the night and I was down to pumping once a day after he goes to bed just to build a stash.

  • I've had to use the TP between trips to Target, and it worked fine. I usually only leak at night if baby sleeps for longer stretches. I dont mind buying the Lanisoh nursing pads though, they're worth it to me...

Mom hacks: always keep extra trash bags at the bottom of all trash cans. Just saves a few minutes when you have to take out the trash.

Buy a big tub of coconut oil and use it as baby lotion, diaper rash cream, for cradle cap, or moisturizing lotion for dry mama skin!

Keep a small diaper bag in the trunk of the car, with a change of clothes for you and baby, diapers, wipes, blanket, binkie. If you're in a hurry, you can skip packing anything up or running out of stuff.

Buy a Milk Snob nursing cover/car seat cover.

Use the crock pot to save time and money. Crockpot oatmeal rocks for busy mornings, and crockpot parmesan chicken takes two seconds to prepare.

Keep a spray bottle with water, peroxide, and a few drops of dawn dish soap handy in each bathroom and the kitchen. Spray a mist over everything each day and wipe down with a cloth. Takes a few seconds and keeps smells and dust down, even though we're super busy!
  • @mrscaterosales Yes to the extra diaper bag in the car! I keep a small one in there as well for emergency situations. Such a good idea. I also keep a small backpack with activities (colouring book, reading book, large Lego pieces etc) for DS. I use it if we are at a restaurant or in a waiting room or somewhere that he might need distracting. Not a baby hack but something for the future!

I feel for you ladies and your leaking, that sucks. I rarely leak and if I do, it's at night.
  • My hacks

I use puppy pads cut in half under DD's bottom when changing her #2s. This way I can pull the dirty diaper out immediately which keeps her feet and hands out of it and I have something to set her dirty bottom on.

Also, I put her dirty diapers in a Munchkin Baggie that has baking soda before putting them in the trash so the garbage doesn't stink.
  • @mrscaterosales- I second the coconut oil! Cured his cradle cap.
@ktewart I was hesitant towards formula too because I didn't want to diminish my supply by replacing meals, but since it's literally just in addition to his regular meals, it hasn't hurt my supply at all. I use the similac for sensitive tummies.
  • I have no fridge to store my parts in at work between pumps, so I use the ridiculously expensive medela cleaning cloths. They're pretty big though so I cut be in half and used one and store the other one back in the bag. Helps stretch one wipe all day. Not a huge hack but has saved me money so far! I also leave my hoses hooked up to my pump between sessions and just zip them up in the side pocket. Again, not anything groundbreaking but it saves a few seconds.
  • @jennsuzanne87, oh, I agree completely! It was a total game changer for us, sleep wise, and it's actually allowed me to put some milk away for later in the freezer, which is awesome. More importantly, it helped reduce my anxiety about him getting enough calories because even though we only use it for one supplement at night, it gave me peace of mind that I had food for him before my supply really came in and regulated. One of the best things we did, for sure.
