Baby's heart beat

Is it normal not to hear the baby's heart beat at 12 weeks

Re: Baby's heart beat

  • How do you mean? With a Doppler? At home or at the doctor's office? Stethoscope?

  • At 10w4d my doctor said there was a 25% chance of her not being able to find the heart beat on a Doppler due to positioning of the baby. It took her a good 2 minutes of searching where she claimed she heard hints of it before she zeroed in on where the heartbeat was and I was able to hear it too.

By 12 weeks I would think it would be a bit easier for a doctor to hear on Doppler but not unheard of if they weren't able to find it.

If you're talking about ultrasounds, they should be able to find a heartbeat by 12 weeks. They were able to find a heartbeat for me at 7 weeks on ultrasound.

If you're talking about you operating a Doppler yourself, it is totally normal to not hear anything yet. Trained doctors who do this every day have issues finding a heartbeat early on, expecting yourself to be able to find it with no training or practice is setting yourself up for problems.
