Almost 11 month old on breastfeeding strike! Any advice?

My son is almost 11months. He will be 11 months on Dec 9th, up until this point he has been amazing! Never had an issue nursing, I went back to work after he was 12 weeks old and since then he drinks breast milk from a bottle during the day and Breastfeeds in the morning and evenings. Weekends he was breastfeeding strictly (after 6months we introduced solids). Then all of a sudden on Friday evening he did not want the breast anymore. Every time I try to offer the breast he bites me (he had 7 teeth and never when either of the teeth were coming in he refused the breast). I'm pumping still and feeding him a bottle but I really would like to continue to breastfeed him when I'm home. Have any of you gone through this? I'm devastated and depressed that he might be done! I hope that's not the case. What should I do? We just finished his first ever dose of antibiotics. Still has a cough and stuffy nose.i Any advice help is appreciated ladies.

  • Maybe try a nipple shield for now? He wouldnt be able to bite down.

  • Might just be the stuffy nose, I know when my LO is congested he is not very interested in BFing. I would try clearing out the nose with saline spray and nose frida before trying to feed him and seeing if that helps.
  • There is a common time when some mothers find their babies doing this exactly, its a type of strike, the problem no one can know for sure as non of us are with you and your baby 24/7 to see all the fatctors leading up to this strike.
However the best tips that have seen success is to:
    1) continue to offer without forcing.
    2) lie down with him in your bed and offer him to nurse while he is calm and sleepy
    3) give him something to bite on so he gets his teething moment out the way and then offer the breast
    4) it is very important that he doesnt associate breastfeeding with being forced- it will only make him dislike it, offer and if he refuses tell him softly and with a big smile that when he is ready youl be there :)

some babies can take up to two weeks of a stike but suddenly come back to it with a full desire. If you want to continue then offering him the breast for the next couple weeks will allow him to choose when he's ready to come back.
Otherwise if the option is not there he wont have the chance to resume.

    Hope this helps
  • My 2nd did this at 9.5 months. I would try and he would drink a bit then bite me and not want more. He pretty much weined himself off. I pumped and gave him that for a couple weeks then we were done. I didn't want to be bit anymore.
