Baby food

How many jars a day are you guys giving you LO? I Think my DS is ready for more than 1 jar a day, but I just really want him to have more formula than baby food at this point. He is 5 months 1 week old.

Re: Baby food

  • Mine is 5 months tomorrow and we are at maybe 3/4 of a jar a day. But, that's just a guess. I give her cereal in the morning - maybe a couple of tablespoons. And then veggies at night - maybe 1/3 of a jar. I have no idea if I'm giving her enough or if my ratio of food to formula is OK. She seems satisfied after meals, so I guess we're good.

  • Do your LOs stick their tongue out when eating? Mine opens his mouth for the spoon as if he's excited to eat, but then his tongue pushes most of the food out. I don't know if I need to just keep practicing with him (we've only done puréed carrots 3 times) or if he's not ready yet. He's 5 months + 1 week. I was thinking it's a reflex and he's not ready yet but he gets kinda excited and opens his mouth wide so I'm not sure if it's just a learning curve thing.
  • Babies stick their tongue out and use it for bottle, it's pretty much opposite of how to eat from a spoon so it's a learning process on how to use their tongue to get to food back towards their throat to swallow. My LO does the same thing it just takes practice.
  • any tips on getting baby to take baby food? mine seems to really hate it!
  • My LO sticks her tongue out sometimes. But, what mine does is grab the spoon from my hand, puts her hand way close up to the spoon part, and then puts both the food and her thumb in her mouth. So I pull the spoon out of her mouth and she's left sucking her thumb. It's very funny and I guess if it gets the food in her mouth, then I'm OK with it. ;)

No advice on how to get LO to eat baby food because so far, everything we've tried mine has loved - cereal, carrots and peas. I would say keep trying or maybe tske a break from trying for a week or so and try again then. Good luck!
  • Our little man can keep the first couple spoonfuls in, then everything else gets pushed out. I figure at this point, solids are more for learning than nutrition, so we stop when he loses interest!
  • Our LO eats cereal in the morning and a jar and a half of puréed food everyday, along with 5, 4oz bottles of formula.

We started with bananas against advice(we were told to start them on veggies, otherwise she might always prefer fruit) and I think eating something she enjoyed the taste of got her used to the texture. Now she eats everything.
  • Oh we are having trouble here!! She won't even eat bannanas! Maybe she's not ready...
  • She may not be, but I think that's okay. Like someone said earlier, right now eating solids is more about learning than nutrition.

Alot of people don't even try solids until at least 6 months so just keep trying and she'll get it eventually!
  • When I went to the Dr last week. My Dr told me to still give LO cereal twice a day and he should be eating two jars a day now. One fruit and one veggie. And that he should be getting 24oz of formula/ breast milk a day. It took my LO about a week to get use to the spoon we started at 4 months he'll be 5months on Dec 9th tmrw which is crazy to me. We started with a veggie peas bc there a lil sweeter. He has had all kinds of different fruits and veggies some things he made a face with the first bite but still continued eating it. He pretty much loves everything. Some of his favorites are prunes, mangos bananas, carrots and green beans. We just moved into stage 2 foods and next month we can start meats. He goes crazy at meal times opens his mouth when he's done with his bite bc he's ready for more. Gets mad if I'm not feeding him fast enough. He has conversations while eating too. Your LO will get use to the spoon and will figure out their tongue. It takes time every baby is different some catch on faster than others.
  • I have a good friend who is a pediatrician and she told me once that "Food before one is just for fun" and that the actual nutrition before 1 year should be from breast milk or formula. I liked the saying!
