How do you ladies take baby grocery shopping?

So I've taken LO shopping but have used his stroller as my basket. I want to take him grocery shopping with me but am not sure how to do this. From the car seat safety discussion ppl mentioned it's not safe to put the car seat in the grocery cart. My baby also doesn't like being worn in a carrier. What do you mamas do?

Re: How do you ladies take baby grocery shopping?

  • Thanks ladies. Part of it is just getting baby out of the house and the other part is not wasting my mom's babysitting services on chores. I'd rather use her time to get myself some me time.
  • I have put her in the basket part in her car seat but you can't get too much. My bigger problem is that unless she is asleep she will cry until you hold her. And I don't want to be taking her in and out of the seat while shopping. I need to get a carrier (have a k'tan but got a size too big and it fits my husband better so LO isn't happy in it when I wear it). Honestly I just go when my husband is home. Usually Sunday afternoon because my husband is either off or only works until 4. Not fun to use my "free" time at the grocery store but I'd rather just get it done in one shot without a screaming baby! I may start taking her when she is less fussy and is big enough to sit in the cart seat.
  • My husband and I either get one of our parents to watch our son, or we will just go together. I push the stroller and he pushes the cart. It makes it easy. I can't imagine trying to worry about the baby, while putting the groceries on the belt and bag them all at the same time.
  • I wear DD in the Boba wrap.  It leaves my hands free and she loves it and is usually asleep within minutes.
  • My grocery store carts have a car seat holder thing and it's amazing! I'm able to fill the whole grocery cart up without the car seat getting in the way
  • I'm a toddler and infant mom, so I only go to the store when I'm either childless or only have the toddler. I was carrying the baby in a Tula but it's starting to get too cold and it's becoming too much work. I'll venture out with both of them when LO is able to sit in the cart.

    I'm so jealous of that!!
  • Maybe you can show the manager of the grocery store a picture and they could get a couple in?! I think another local lady here asked the manager and they got 3 of these in.. They just clip onto the cart :)
  • HyVee has ordering online and either drive through pick up or home delivery. It's what's keeping me sane. Will be soooo helpful when I go back to work.

Krogers has been rolling that out and I can't wait for our store to get it
  • My lo HATES having her carseat in the cart. It doesn't matter how asleep she is she will wake up and freak. However if that works for you you can also put a shopping basket on the bottom of the cart. Then you can put more small things there without loosing them!

I'm waiting until she gets more comfortable having her legs out in the K'tan to take her with me. Right now I use grocery shopping as alone time when SO gets home from work.
  • It is a bummer though that it's not compatible with target shopping carts ;) so she sits inside the cart at target... Helps mommy buy less
  • My graco click connect seat clips onto the cart. To release it you have to pull the red lever up in the back. Works really well... I am still very cautious and never take a hand off the shopping cart though.

Be careful with this. It's being found that clicking the seat into the cart can actually damage the car seat. I did that with my previous children but found out about it ruining car seats while I was pregnant this time.

This one just shows of the safety to the child. I'm trying to find one about the seat itself.

I have a graco click connect as well. Does it fit most carts? I thought the car seat safety discussion said clipping car seats to carts can mess up the latch.

I was not aware of this! Looks like I'm done doing that! Yikes!

I put her in the ergobaby carrier when I went to Costco yesterday and it was perfect. I put a blanket over her because it's so cold, and it wasn't bad. Like PP said she fell right asleep and that made it even easier and worth the potential haste of getting her into it.

  • Wear that baby!! Hands free to push the cart. Baby goes to sleep.
  • If I do go to the grocery store, I either put the whole carseat in the big part of the cart, or for really small trips I'll hook a shopping basket onto the stroller using one of those "mommy clips." They are really strong.

I have a Mommy clip and never thought to use it like this. Great idea.
  • I use the stroller. If I need a lot of stuff, I just push both a cart and the stroller. I'll leave the cart at the end if the aisle and just carry things back to it. I try not to go at busy times so this is easier.
  • I wear baby in the front pack with her facing me. This way I have hands free and lots of cart space. It is a little hard picking things up from bottom shelves so if I need big stuff I take someone with me.
  • I put her in the snuggle and wear her at the store. I don't like to take the car seat in. Also, I find that when I'm wearing her, people at the store are so helpful!! (Get thing for me, help me put my groceries on the conveyer belt, etc.)
  • I guess I just put the car seat on the child carrier part of the cart if it's sturdy. Sometimes I will turn the seat sideways so it sits down in the actual seat part of the cart so its sturdier but still have the basket portion for things.
  • My SO does all the grocery shopping. And the cooking. I go to target a bunch though and usually just push a stroller and grab a basket. I usually have my 12 year old so she can push a cart if we need big things.
  • The only way I can do it is by wearing her. I use a Lillebaby carrier, and I honestly have no idea how any mom gets anything accomplished without one!
