PCOS and Breastfeeding

Hi all - I have PCOS and a low milk supply. For the past 4 weeks, I have been pumping only to see how milk I was actually producing. Come to find out I am only producing less than 1 oz per pumping session. I have been drinking water and just started eating oatmeal. I was wondering if anyone out there was PCOS had the same issue and found a way to increase the supply?

Re: PCOS and Breastfeeding

  • I don't have pcos but I have a low supply. I take fenugreek (2 caps 3x/d), sunflower lecithin (1 cap 4x/d), oatmeal for breakfast, lots of water, and I make homemade lactation cookies. The fenugreek and lecithin definitely make a difference.

  • I have mild PCOS, but had oversupply problems. Pumping is not a true indicator of how much milk you are producing. The only way to know how much baby gets in a feeding is to do a weighed feeding. Baby is more efficient than a pump. If baby is making enough wet/dirty diapers and gaining .5 - 1 oz a day, then you have an adequate supply. How old is your LO?

This. A pump can not do what a baby can do. I suggest meeting with a LC and getting in touch with a local La Lech League group.
  • My LO is 8 weeks However, after she feeds for 45 or more she is screaming that she is hungry and will then eat 3ozs of formula. That is why I am thinking I am not producing enough.
  • I would encourage you to see a LC for a weighed feeding. Then you'll know how much baby is actually getting. The LC can also check baby for a tongue or lip tie - which can effect baby's ability to transfer milk.

PCOS can cause a low supply, and supplementing may be the answer, but getting checked out by an LC will help rule out those other factors.
