Thyroid Medication

I currently take medication for hypothyroidism.  The meds need to be taken first thing in the morning at least a half hour before eating.  Thanks to MS it's become essentially impossible to take and/or keep down the medicine.  Is anyone here taking meds for this and have any ideas?  I tried calling my doctor, but can't get through right now so thought I would ask here.  Thanks!

Re: Thyroid Medication

  • TBH I usually take mine with breakfast. Terrible, I know. But I do what I can right now and just try to get through the first trimester in one piece.

  • That's kind of what I'm thinking.  I just wasn't sure if clinically there was any benefit, but I guess some medicine is better than none.

  • Hey- I'm taking the exact same thing. What I've been doing is taking it in the middle of the night when I inevitably get up to pee. It hasn't been bothering my stomach. However, my MS isn't that bad. Give that a try

Tried :(  I wake up about 45min later throwing up.  It's like my body is just rejecting the meds on an empty stomach.

  • Oh man, I'm sorry. That's miserable. I was on synthroid during my last two pregnancies and would take it while I was still in bed, but it doesn't seem that will help you. Are you on any anti-nausea meds? If I take a Zofran before getting out of bed, I can usually avoid the morning pukes. Some docs won't prescribe that anymore, though.

I think, in the end, keeping it down is more important than taking it on an empty stomach, so I would try to do it between meals. Hopefully your doc has some advice, too.
  • Taking diclegis which helps a lot actually.  I know I could keep it down if it was with food, it's just the empty stomach part that I'm having trouble with.

Thanks everyone!  Going to try my doctor again tomorrow and see what they think.

  • If you're puking 45min after taking the pill, and aren't seeing the actual pill come back up I would consider the dose as mostly absorbed. I'm an RN and we only repeat meds if they are vomited within 30 minutes.

If it is coming back up, taking it with minimal food would be best (like a few crackers or whatnot). If you adjust the way you're taking your meds, ask your doc to monitor your levels to make sure they're still okay (PS you should be having your levels monitored closely either way since pregnancy increases your bodies demand on your thyroid. Since my BFP I've been taking an extra pill twice a week as per my endo).

  • Hi - so sorry - it is tough knowing you need the medicine and can't keep it down. I second the trying it in the middle of the night. And if you must take with food - nothing with calcium if you can help it!

  • I haven't started with the pukes yet, but this thread was super helpful since I'm on synthroid too. I wasn't for my last two pregnancies, so I'm not sure how this is all going to go.

  • Hi there,

Sorry that you're having such a rough time. I also take Synthroid, but my MS hasn't been as bad as yours. What if you take it between meals during the day instead of first thing in the morning? Hope your MS decreases soon!
