Finding 2 heartbeats on home doppler

Hello ladies!  Quick question for everyone... I am currently 9w3d and have been able to find 2 heartbeats on my home doppler for the past 3-4 days.  One heartbeat is around 175 bpm and the other is slower around 150 bpm.  The heartbeats are found 2 inches apart and each has been consistently in the same place.  I haven't had an ultrasound yet, but I assume there's only one baby in there (multiples don't run in the family).  Why am I hearing two heartbeats? Google has mixed opinions.  Is it an echo heartbeat? Heartbeat of the placenta/ umbilical cord? Two babies? TIA!!

  • Multiples don't have to run in your family in order for you to have them! Just fyi!

  • Do you have an ultrasound scheduled?

I don't think there's really any way for any of us to answer your questions. I would mention it to your doctor and maybe if you don't have an early ultrasound scheduled he or she will agree to one if there's a chance of multiples?
  • @jlgriff11 - I realize that!  I would be the first of the very first to have twins in our families and would be extremely surprised!  A welcomed surprise of course!

Thanks @DobbysSock - I have an ultrasound scheduled in two weeks.. I'll be 11 weeks then.  I'm so relieved to have found a heart beat but it's so odd that I'm hearing two?!

  • Well, there's a first time for everything! :)
  • Well that's good you have an ultrasound scheduled! I have a friend who found out her second pregnancy was twins at her 20 week anatomy scan - and ended up with 3 under 2! If it is multiples it'll be nice to know a little sooner than that.

I would assume hearing 2 heart beats is a sign of two babies but I really have no clue if there is another medical explanation so I guess you'll just have to wait and see!
  • @DobbysSock - thanks so much for the response.  I'll be sure to keep everyone updated how it all turns out!

  • On the off chance it isn't reading bpm correctly, it could also pick up your heartbeat. (But that doesn't sound like the case here.) That would be so exciting if you found twins that way!
  • @ninji15 - I definitely can find my heartbeat.. it's much slower around 120 or less bpm and more of a whooshing sound rather than fast train tracks. I'll play around with the home doppler again tonight and see what I can find. I hate waiting until 11 weeks for an ultrasound! I'm at least reassured of one nice and healthy heartbeat, if not two!

  • I have no idea, but interested to see the results!
  • Normally I tend to lean towards singleton but it does seem strange that the heartbeats are different and you pick it up multiple times. And it's not yours according to what you say. It is possible to have twins without them running in the family. I had been pregnant with twins and am the only person in my family. Chance for twins also increases with age.

Nevertheless, I would urge you to try to not jump to conclusions until you have your u/s. If it is twins, they will be able to tell right away. All we can do is speculate. One healthy baby would be amazing also!
  • @acadia07 - I can't wait to find out and put my mind at ease!

@BostonBaby1 - Thanks for the response.  I'm only 26 and I would assume only one baby is in there, but we shall see!  At least I can be sure one baby has a healthy heartbeat :)
