1st Trimester

These dates don't make sense... Please help? (Loss briefly mentioned)

So, I know that pregnancy is usually dated based on your LMP. I, however, had an early m/c on 10/31 and haven't had a MP since. I did ovulate on 11/17 (verified by OPK and temps). So I figured, based on my O date, that I'm about 4w3d today.
However, I went to my doctor to have hcg checked a couple of times this week. The doctor who looked at my labs and called me isn't my normal doctor, but she called me today and told me that my numbers did double, but that I'm still very early (hcg = 156). She said, "we need to set up an appointment for your first ultrasound, and we usually can't see anything until around 6 weeks, so let's schedule you for...Let's see, the week of January 11th, because you'll be around 6-7 weeks by then."

After we got off the phone, I looked at my calendar, and that doesn't make ANY SENSE. January 11th is a little over 5 weeks away. I would be nearly 10 weeks along by then, wouldn't I? It's possible that she meant 6-7 weeks after ovulation, but even then, that week would be EIGHT weeks post-O.

I'm probably going to a different OB going forward anyway, because this office has been HORRIBLE to work with ever since my m/c (they were great with my 1st pregnancy but they've really gone downhill) but now I don't know when to schedule my first appointment! I'm so confused!

    Can you link your chart?
  • Why don't you just call your doctor back and ask them to clarify?
They're the worst when it comes to answering/returning calls. That's the main reason I'm switching to a different OB. If I call, I probably won't hear back until at least Monday, and that's if I call again and leave another message Monday morning.

I used a paper chart that came with my thermometer, so I don't have it. :(

I'm wondering if you geared up to O and had a couple seemingly high temps and you
think you O'ed, but didn't. This happened to me twice recently where FF gave me CH and took them away (and repeated a couple times). Maybe the OB is basing your EDD on HCG numbers and you actually got KU later than you think.

  • Thanks all.
I ended up calling the office I want to switch to and explained it to them. They agreed my doc's math was wrong and scheduled me for an appointment at 7w1d (December 23rd) to do my first ultrasound and get an idea of exactly how far along I Actually am because even with OPKs and charting, you can't know 100% for sure without an ultrasound. My BFP was 10 DPO (based on when I think I O'd) and that's usually about the earliest you can get a positive test, so I don't think I ovulated any later than that.
Anyway, they said that waiting until January doesn't make sense, especially considering my recent MC and the fact that we aren't positive about dates, so I've got it all sorted out!

Thank you all for your input!

  • And Charting is NOT the same thing as Temping.
  • edited December 2015

I'm confused... I thought I remembered you saying on TTGP you weren't temping and instead relied on your trusty OPKs so I took a look

On November 23rd, you stated "I was going to start temping this month but after several days of forgetting (I'm too groggy in the morning to remember that I'm supposed to temp and I never got into the habit) I decided to hold off for a few months. I'm using OPKs just to see around when my body might be about to ovulate and my cycles are very regular so that's enough for me at the moment."

I'm going to assume you're lying about having a chart, especially as most people would be crazy to chart on paper and unable to reliably figure it out their first month temping. I'm going to stand by what I said above and say that you did not ovulate when you assume you did. Since you've been vocal about how much you have sex, I'm going to assume you easily had good timing for a later BFP. FWIW, it's really common to have a wacky chart post-loss. My own body geared up to O multiple times post-loss and I didn't actually do so. This is why OPKs are not reliable in confirming ovulation.
@Kristin712 Ok I'm really glad someone else brought this up because I remember that post too but I didn't know where to find it so I didn't mention it.

OP, were you charting or no?
  • Even if you had a paper chart you could easily take a pic of it with your phone and post it here... right?

Anyways, OP  glad you are going to the doc and will know the approximate gestation of your baby.

Is anyone else really curious what the point of this post was, though?
  • My guess is that op means that if she would be 6-7w at the week of jan 11th that means that she has not ovulated yet...and can't yet be pregnant so that would have been weird right?!? If my math isn't way off at 6-7 w it's actually 4-5w since fertilisation
  • Hey ya'll.
First - I thought temping/charting were the same, so maybe I was incorrect. Though I guess there were many times when I took my temp, saw that it was normal (within my 97.3-97.7 range) that I didn't bother jotting it down, so I guess I was temping way more than I was charting.

Here's what I did, for those who asked: I took my temperature every morning when I woke up for about a week (starting 11/4) and drew a little dot on the paper graph that came with my basal thermometer. I forgot to take my temp several times during the week after that, and almost always neglected to write it down, except once when it randomly was high (98-something). BUT when my OPK was positive, on 11/16, I decided to make sure I took my temp for the next several days because my body was gearing up for ovulation and temping is the only way to verify that it DID in fact happen. My average temp was around 97.3-97.7 on the days I took it. When I took my temp on 11/18 it was 98.5 (FYI there's another decimal at the end on my thermometer). I kept taking my temperature for the rest of that week (so Wed - Saturday) and then I started being lazy about it again because I assumed, based on OPKs, the rise in temp, and my usual O symptoms (I get one-sided cramping for a few hours), that it probably happened. Sure enough, 10 days after the day I was 95% sure was O date, I tested positive on a HPT (I tested negative on 9 DPO).

Also, for those of you asking why I don't just post a picture, I am usually at work when I post here, and my graph is almost useless because I didn't write down my temp if it fell within my normal temperature range. Also, I tested positive a week and a half ago and had my pregnancy confirmed by my doc last week, so I threw the thing away. My next appointment is an ultrasound appointment (when I'll be about 7 weeks) where they'll do more accurate dating.

One last thing - I posted this because I thought maybe I was crazy/misinformed with regard to dating pregnancy and thought I'd ask you guys since my doctor's office is incompetent and I hadn't found a new one yet. Turns out, the doctor I talked to was in fact wrong and I did find a new doc pretty quickly. As the PP said, for me to be 7 weeks on Jan 11th like my doc suggested, I would have to not currently be pregnant (O date would be today), which obviously is not the case.

    Thanks all!
