Weight gain before BFP, moving forward with positive thinking

Hey guys can anyone relate to this? I lost 36 pounds before our BFP. After my weight loss I was found to still be anovulatory so we did the ovidrel shot and femara and throughout those three-four weeks of being off of my diet and trying to get pregnant I regained 8 pounds. I saw the scale creeping up. Before the ovidrel shot I was 6pounds up and now that I have the BFP its 8-9. I wasn't eating healthy so some of it may be water but some of it is probably that I had to host three thanksgivings in the month of november and I ate like crap.

So I am 4 weeks pregnant now looking at a scale that is 8-9 pounds heavier that it was. And before even after a 36 pound loss I was still "technically obese" by 10 pounds. Now 18 pounds.

I have no plans to diet at all period no question.  I plan on eating 2200 cals of healthy food every day and focus on baby. Eating when I'm hungry and choosing good foods, etc. But my first appointment isnt until December 28th for my ultra sound and I need a way to look at the number on the scale without feeling like a failure and knowing that I am being healthy for baby.

What is a decent weight gain for the 1st trimester when bmi is 32? What are your thoughts and feedback and suggestions. I know I am opening myself to criticism, so please be gentle I am a first timer and I feel nervous putting this question out there. Thanks!

  • Congrats on the weight you did lose! That's an accomplishment. Don't beat yourself up about your starting weight. All you can do now is take care of yourself and set up a plan/goal weight with your doctor.
I found this chart. It may be helpful.

  • Hey there, I am also a little over what I would like to be starting this pregnancy, and I just wanted to offer some encouragement. It's awesome that you were able to lose as much as you did, and I agree, some of this month's gain is probably just water weight. My plan is to ask the doc her recommendation at my first appointment, and see if she can give me some guidelines to help meet them. Hang in there and congrats!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Awesome job on your weight loss! And don't forget, you are bloated right now too. Just try not to stress too much about the numbers. Eat as healthy as you can, try to work in some light excersize, like walking and take care of yourself. Your doctor will tell you what you should do according to your body and health.
I know I am actually trying to lose a few pounds before I start gaining. Right now I weigh more than I ever have without being pregnant. I'm only 12 pounds less than where I was when I gave birth to both my kids. But I'm trying to lose by eating healthy snacks and drinking lots of water. I also do yoga at home, and am trying to get myself doing it regularly again. I gained all my weight when I hurt my back and quit yoga 2 years ago.
    Good luck!
  • I am at the heaviest I have ever been in my entire life. I'm pretty bummed about it, but hoping for the best and knowing I need to kick my booty back into shape post baby!

  • Congrats on your weight loss! Losing weight is hard and you've don a great job. Don't beat yourself up over 8 pounds. You will be able to lose that. Do what you feel is right, until you see your doctor. Once you have an appointment, talk with them about how much you should gain, what exercises you can be doing, etc. With my son, I was overweight; my doctor was honest and said she only wanted me to gain about 15 lbs. They will tell you what you should be doing. Don't worry.

Until then, try to stay calm and enjoy being pregnant.
  • Thank you guys for all of the feedback! I messaged my nurse and asked for any book suggestions. The encouragement is really nice. :)

  • girl, i feel this so much.  i had an intense weight loss journey that took me from a size 16 to size 2, and the prospect of gaining weight during pregnancy feels like a nightmarish reversal of all the progress i've made.  i'm also weighing in much higher than i expected for only being in my 6th week, but like the other posters said- it's likely a lot of water weight and bloating.

just stay positive until your appointment and eat well, then check with your ob about his/her recommendation for weight gain.  i think around 15 lbs would be a perfectly reasonable gain for your bmi.
  • Great job on your weight less! I'm in a similar boat! I had lost 90lbs, but have gained almost 20 in the last 2 months, pretty much since I started my IVF treatments. and the fact I could only walk for exercise, I completely got off track. Nervous about gaining too much back. But obviously ready for some weight gain-- finally getting a BFP , I'll take it!!

  • I'm also in a similar boat. I was waiting to get through the holidays before hunkering down and dropping the extra 15 lbs. I've gained in the last year or so. Then I got a BFP and now I legitimately look like I'm already 3-4 months along lol. At least when people ask if I'm pregnant now I can say yes.
  • Congrats on your loss! Kind of in the same boat as I finally lost all of my baby weight plus more just two months ago. Also last time I got pregnant had gotten down to a healthy weight. My recommendation is keep up any workouts you are already doing, not only will it help excess weight but will help you carry baby weight better. I also found great success using the app Pregnancy Pounds. It would set a weekly target to try to stay within as well as by trimester. This helped me keep weight gain in a very healthy range. Also, if I found myself exceeding my goals it helped me to cut back on some treats I was sneaking in! All the best, being aware and having a plan to stay healthy is fantastic start :)
  • *******TW: loss mentioned*******
I am in the same boat as you, lost a little over 30 lbs earlier this year, gained back about 6 lbs at the end of September after my loss and didn't lose it before getting my bfp. Also still considered "technically obese" as well just barely, but I did see a nutritionist that works at my obgyn office and they said a healthy weight gain would be 15-22 lbs. They said that most of the weight gain should be in the second and third trimester.

I'm just trying to eat healthy, try to do some physical activity like walking, and not stress too much over the weight, just try your best to be healthy and stress free for baby! :)
