Transitioning to crib

Would love advice on how you have done this. DD has been sleeping in rock n play and swing and now at 3 months we will move to crib. I feel like she and we are all ready. I tried to do naps in the crib to get her more familiar. She would wake herself up after about 5 minutes so I then half swaddled her in a swaddle me with her arms out and pacifier and that worked for a while but she never fell asleep. Any tips you can share would be great!

Re: Transitioning to crib

  • We dreaded this transition for our boys, but tried a bunch of different things that made it work within a week. We did crib naps (as you also mentioned), swaddles, a musical mobile, and massages. The combo of those different things helped them to get out of the Rock n Play and into their cribs happily. If you're interested in all the things we tried that worked, I wrote up a summary of our best tactics. Good luck! https://www.theydontfeedthemselves.com/transitioning-twins-to-cribs/

  • When I did the transition from RnP to crib with DD she was still swaddled (4 months old). I rolled up a receiving blanket and put it UNDER the sheet around her body so she felt snuggled. After a week or 2 I took the blanket out and swaddled one arm out, then both arms and left the swaddled wrapped around her waist (I did this over a few weeks). Both my kids loved the swaddle around their waist.

  • Getting ready to make that transition with DD, with DS we ended up swaddling at first, it would work for the 1st half of the night but after he'd get up and feed he'd end up in the rock n play again, mainly because it was just easier to deal with at 2am.  After he started breaking out of swaddle he was super twitchy and would wake himself up over and over again so we ended up trying the merlin sleep suit. Worked wonderfully for several months until he started to roll over and we had to stop using it. Busting out the merlin sleep suit for DD, but will probably try swaddling first, she doesn't seem as twitchy a him. Good Luck!

I did this too-towels under the sheet to simulate the curve of the napper bassinet. Then just trying to spend time in the crib during the day. I did this for about a week. I had two nights that I attempted to put her in the crib at night that didn't go well, but last night she slept in there from 10-4:30!!
  • She slept in crib for first time last night and slept from 7:30-4, fed & diaper change then slept 4:30-7:30. I call that a success!!
