When to worry about being sick

I'm sick; bad cough, sore throat, lost my voice, stuffy nose. It's been about a week and I don't seem to be getting any better.

I don't normally go to the doctor for a cold. But things have changed, now I'm worried about our little peanut.

Does anyone have any experience being sick during pregnancy, has your doctor told you when you should get professional help?

Re: When to worry about being sick

  • I think it's when you have a fever that you need to get help? Regardless, I'd put in a call to my OB/midwife in your shoes just to be sure about their office policy about illness. My gut says a cold, even a bad one, won't hurt baby. But don't take my word for it! If you're concerned, call.

  • I've got similar symptoms. In addition, my cough turned really bad, and I've had violent coughing fits, to the point of vomiting. I saw the dr. today, and am on meds, including two category C inhalers. You can try to tough it out to forego the meds, but I got to the point where I couldn't do that anymore.

  • I agree that the cough, cold, sore throat usually is a virus - rest, fluids, salt water gargle, more rest can help.  Watch out for signs that the illness is moving to your lungs - my ob said to look out for pneumonia.  Personally, a low fever is not worrisome, as you are fighting the infection, but a high fever needs to be controlled because you don't want the fetus to be overheated.  These are my beliefs  (I also believe in flu shots for pregnant women, especially!)...my husband has a nasty sore throat virus that I  think he caught at work.  I am resting today preemptively!  Stay healthy ladies!

  • Baby will be fine through your cold as long as you are staying hydrated and eating and resting. But if you are miserable, go see the doc. It might have moved on to something more than a cold and some antibiotics will help make it better faster. As a PP said, it's a fever that can be dangerous for baby. So if you have that, you need to try to get it down and call to let your doc know.

I had 2 awful colds when I was pregnant with DD. Just colds so nothing could be done. But seriously, so miserable since none of the approved colds meds did anything for me. Use a humidifier if you have one. Certain essential oils are safe while pregnant. I swear by them as I have managed to avoid getting truly sick when my DD brings something home.

  • What PP's said about fevers. When I was pregnant with DD I got really sick and was having a hard time breathing. I went to the doctor and he reminded me that if I'm not getting enough oxygen then neither is the baby. I ended up having to use my inhaler even though it's class C so we could make sure baby was getting enough oxygen. I would go with your gut and it never hurts to call your doctor and ask his or her opinion.
  • I had a bad, bad cold in week 5 & they said of my fever went above 100 again to call. It had been a week. If it lasted another week they wanted me to call/come back. Hope that's a little helpful! I'd at least go ahead & call.
  • I would call your doctor. You (and baby) need to get healthy.
  • I would be most concerned by a high fever and/or trouble breathing. Everybody tends to get "the gunk" this time of year.

  • I don't have a fever...so that's a good thing I guess. And I did get a flu shot a few weeks ago.

If I'm still a petri-dish on Monday, I'll go to the doctor. That will be 9 days since I started feeling bad.

  • So weird! I also caught a cold. Had a sinus infection 2 weeks and now again, feeling under the weather. No fever, but I just feel like crap and I'm too afraid to take anything. So tea, rest and vitamins it is...
  • @countrygrl5533 - I was wondering about using essential oils. I have a book on them and read it but I am a very cautious person and nervous about using them or when I put them on my ds. Dif you use them with being pregnant and everything was fine? I am just curious..i really would like toncontinue to use them while being pregnant so I dont get sick. I mainly just use theives and lemon oil.
  • If your temp is above 100 or below 95. Also, if your doctor hasn't provided a list of approved medicines, be sure to call for those.

It can get a little tricky with medicine because there are so many varities of each type and only certain ones are okay. Like my doctor allows Mucinex, but only the original type. And my husband bought Robitusin DM (sp) but I can only have D. Also, some types are only okay during certain trimesters.

My favorite thing now for a sore throat is hot water with lemon juice and honey. I thought it would taste weird without tea, but it's really good and there's nothing in it that would cause issues during any trimester.
  • When you have a high fever is when you should go to the doctor or call the doctor. Other than that Robitussen DM, Tylenonl, Vick's Vapor Rub, and a humidifier will be awesome for you.

  • I too have a cold...going on 2wks nowo.O It's really weird that others are experiencing this at about the same time. It's not bad...but it's annoying and I don't want to take anything for it lol. Hope you get better & others who are sick((:
  • I had a really bad cold and I rarely get sick. I was concerned about my baby so i emailed my doctor. He told me not to worry that the baby will be fine. The only thing he told me to worry about was if i developed a fever. So as long as you rest and have plenty of fluids and continue to eat you and baby will be fine
  • A cold won't affect the baby, and it's normal for viruses to last 2+ weeks, and even to have a post-viral cough for a few weeks after that

I didn't even know about essential oils when I was pg with DD so this is my first pregnancy using them. I found a list of what is safe and what is not. Can't get to the computer until tomorrow but will get you the link then. If I forget, bug me because baby brain had killed my memory. lol

I do know Thieves is a "use with caution" oil. I will only use it in the diffuser right now not applied on me.

I'm more likely to use an oil instead of a medicine. I trust them more. Peppermint oil saved me during morning sickness and helps me so much with headaches.

I think the main thing is to not ingest them (although personally I don't think anyone should ingest them, pregnant or not).

  • ashy16052904 Here is the main guideline I am using: https://modernalternativepregnancy.com/2013/02/16/what-essential-oils-should-i-avoid-in-pregnancy-and-weekend-links/#

Because cinnamon bark is in the "avoid" list and it is an ingredient in Thieves, I limit my exposure to that one. When DD is sick, I will diffuse it but will use less than I normally do and only run the diffuser once in a day. I do not put it on my skin at all.
