3rd Trimester

Craving Sugar Like Crazy!!

Idk what the heck happened, but lately I crave all things sugar-filled. Pop, chocolate, sugar cookies, cheesecake, cupcakes, actual candy like Jawbreakers, sour patch kids etc. I feel like a greedy and selfish mother every time I have a pop because I know it's no good for the baby...then I feel even worse when I eat dessert/candy items on top of drinking pop. I am 35w + 3 days and up until I turned 31 weeks I didn't have any sugary cravings. I'm not saying that I didn't eat anything that had sugar in it, I just had more self-control and it was more moderate and I wasn't actually CRAVING to stuff myself with sugary garbage. I feel like I'm losing my self-control over here. Willy Wonka himself probably couldn't satisfy my sugary needs. For 90% of my pregnancy I crave healthy foods like mashed potatoes and steak and chicken and soup etc...actual home cooked meals. Is it normal to become this addicted to sugars at all? It'll be a couple weeks until I see my midwife again so I was just wondering if anyone on here had a similar experience? Any thoughts, tips or tricks to get myself to slow down on the garbage-binge- eating

Re: Craving Sugar Like Crazy!!

  • You are definitely not alone! I've been eating healthy and now suddenly there are moments when I want nothing but sweets and chocolate like oreos and nutella.

  • Lucky you didn't feel this way until 35 weeks. I have felt like this my whole pregnancy lol I had a big sweet tooth before and now it's worse. I usually would snack on fruit because it's sweet. I did eat some of my cravings but in moderation. You can certainly mention it to your midwife for some tips, I'm sure you can call her for some advice. I would say eat what you crave but don't eat too much at once and balance it with your healthy foods. That's what I have done and so far it seems to be working.

  • Yes! Me too!! I'm 34 weeks, and I haven't eaten cake in 10 years until 2 months ago. I make cupcakes every week now. I love chocolate candy, and strawberry milkshakes. Never really had a sweet tooth either.
  • I try my best to balance my sugar intake...its just hard. Anytime I see a chocolate bar my mouth instantly waters (I'm not even into chocolate that much I swear!) and it's like once I do have some sugar into me I can't stop...1 cupcake turns into 5, 3 cookies turns into half the pack and so on and so forth, it's rediculous! Lol for the most part we don't have a lot of sugary snacks in our house (even if we did we probably wouldn't thanks to me and my sugar-addicted self!) so that helps but any time I do choose to buy chocolate bars or whatever, they don't last very long. Then comes the guilt. I decided I'm going to try to replace sugar cravings with salad because I LOVE me a good chicken ceasar salad! More nutritious for my growing baby and I won't feel like crying into a good salad the way I feel like crying devouring sugars :expressionless:
    Thanks ladies!!
  • Eat all the sugar!! For those of us with gestational diabetes who can't!
  • I was advised that I need to eat more sugar and carbs. I'm not sure how you've been eating up to this point, but they say that we crave what our bodies need and our bodies need carbs. I wasn't eating enough carbs and my body started breaking down fat cells to use for nutrition for the baby. If I weren't pregnant this wouldn't be a bad thing.

  • I want all things sugar out of no where starting around Halloween, all that leftover Halloween candy ugh!

Non-related question to op, we call pop pop where I live and I know a lot of places call it soda, soda-pop, etc. I'm just curious where you're from. I'm in upstate ny.
  • I gave in to my sugar craving and gained 5lbs in a week. Awesome. :(

@paytonpedro I also call it pop and I'm from CO.
  • From October to Novemeber I started really craving sweets and would typically give in to the cravings. Gained 12 lbs in one month...needless to say I've cut back!! Lol

@paytonpedro I'm from MO and I call it pop. I'm on the KC side, but friends on the StL side call it soda...

I think you'll be fine indulging every once in awhile. The thing with sugar though is it sets off parts of your brain that make it "happy" so it will crave more sugar. It's like an addiction! The less you eat it the less your brain will crave it too. Granted pregnancy has put that to the wayside for me lol.
  • It's definitely like an addiction, and I find the more that I indulge the more I want! When I get really out of control with the cravings (like when I dream about being trapped in a room full of cakes and pastries and chocolates, and my only way out is to eat everything or I WILL DIE. Best dream ever.) I tend to do a mini-detox off the sugar, for like 5 days to a week, where I cut almost all sugar out of my diet. That seems to be the only think that kicks me out of the craving cycle, and then I can go back to indulging occasionally and be fine.

I've also found that starting my day with a protein rich diet (usually eggs, salsa, avocado, arugula in a couple of tortillas) really helps me start the day feeling satisfied. If I start with something sweet it puts me on an all-day sugar craving.

I'm also trying to keep it in check after gaining close to 10 lbs in one month. I'm currently only 1 b above my recommended range for this week of pregnancy, and if I can keep it to 1 lb a week I will still come in under the recommended 35 lbs, so I'm trying not to go on a tilt. Only in my dreams, lol.

I'm actually from Ontario, Canada. I call pop pop but a lot of people call it soda as well here. Pop/Soda are the popular commonly used names.

I indulge in popcicles and cookies and cupcakes a lot! Chocolate bars are an every so often type treat but I still crave sugar a lot, Especially late at night! I'll be up around midnight just wanting cupcakes and jello or chocolate or a certain type of pop (which10 minutes later I immediately regret because it fires up the heartburn like crazy!! Ouch!) I talked to my midwife and she said it's OK to let myself indulge every once in a while but I have to make sure I'm eating healthy foods too and trying to keep balance. She says I'm probably craving sugar most likely due to a drop in my blood sugar in which my body will react and cause me to get hungry or crave sweets so I eat. All is good though, baby and I are still perfectly healthy and stable. I still think I could eat Willy Wonka right out of his own factory though lol.
