Growth spurt or low milk supply??

My little one will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. The last few days she's been nursing a lot longer then normal. She's still nursing at the same frequency. She will unlatch herself then when I start to burp her she starts rooting and fussing. When she re latches she sucks but I can't hear her swallowing. Is it possible I'm not producing enough or could it be a growth spurt making her nurse longer?

Re: Growth spurt or low milk supply??

  • I am interested in what others say. I am experiencing this same thing. My DD will be 8 weeks on Wednesday.

  • I think it could be a growth spurt or just comfort sucking. My 7 week old is acting similar. She has done this a couple different times, and it always seems to be when she is growing. She has been really fussy and nursing a lot.
  • Has she been nursing longer or more frequent?
  • My baby is now 9 weeks and I felt like she went through a growth spurt from five weeks until 7 1/2 weeks. Somehow she turned a corner at 9 weeks finally ... ( I probably shot myself in the foot by saying that ) lol
  • My LO does this sometimes and I've done a few things that seem to work to calm her down and move on lol. If she's eaten from both sides and is unlatching and kicking and such then I will move her away from my breast and give her a pacifier. I posted about this issue in the past and someone mentioned their LO likes to suck for comfort and sometimes seems to get upset with getting milk if they are just sucking for comfort therefore they would act out by unlatching and screaming and kicking. So by giving the pacifier she gets the comfort but no milk. I tried this and noticed it works pretty well!
