When to take a break

Hi all,

My husband and I are on our second round of Letrozole/Ovidrel. We're discussing next steps if this round isn't successful. My thought is to take a break - I wanted to train for a road race in March and we have a trip planned for February so I don't want to have to worry about shots and pills then! But... there's the nagging feeling that we could be missing our chance. I know we are comparatively early in the process, but I'll be 33 soon so I do feel like the clock is ticking. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Me: 33, PCOS with anovulation
DH: 36, No known issues
TTC since 11/2014
1000mg Metformin daily

Oct-Dec 2015: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI = BFN x 2
Feb-May 2016: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN x 3
August 2016: Clomid 100mg no response, Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN

Re: When to take a break

  • You have to do what feels right for you, it is a tough decision and you can't go down the road of "what-ifs". Me and DH were thinking about taking a break this month because we are travelling for the holidays and were ultimately forced to due to a chemical pregnancy that prolonged being able to start another cycle. While I still have the thought that this could have been our month, I'm going to enjoy being medication free, getting back into a good running routine and just enjoying the holidays. You still have to live your life and not let IF take over, but it is a very complicated balancing act!

Are you able to fit in another cycle in Jan and still have enough time to train for your race?

  • I agree do what feels right. I believe things will work themselves out. Sometimes not worry about the process rejuvenates your mind, body, & soul. Who knows how this cycle will go. FX
  • Hi @LizzieJ13 - I'm just coming off a long break and I have to tell you, it was the best thing I ever did. I was losing sight of who I was, and who my DH and I were as a couple. When we live in this world of TTC we become enveloped in the journey and it becomes part of our identity. I found it incredibly valuable to take time to reclaim who I am as an individual, and spend time loving my husband as more than a sperm machine ;) honestly though!

I'm 30, so understand that need to get going as mother nature isn't always so understanding, but I'm coming back ready to try with a much more positive attitude and balanced approach. And I feel so much healthier and less stressed which I feel could play in well to our success potential.

I would highly recommend it, but only if you genuinely feel like you can step away fully and enjoy the break, otherwise it may be more stress than its worth.

Big hugs. I know the feeling!

  • I strongly recommend a break if you have a gut feeling about it . I'm going into month two of a two month break and I will tell you it is amazing . Just not going to the doc constantly is a huge relief . I feel like I'm not obsessing and making my life only about baby baby baby . My husband and I think were both in a depression and needed to re group and just remind ourselves to enjoy life ! I also now have more energy to exercise and spend time with friends which is awesome ! I was just in a really bitter place about everything and now I'm just trying to get my mind right before I dive into treatments in a month !

There is no right or wrong answer obviously just do what feels right to you !! A couple months off is nothing in the grand scheme of things !

  • All true. Thanks for the reassurance everyone. Just injected the Ovidrel so fingers crossed for this cycle but yes, definitely feel like a couple months off would be good for us. I really, really feel for those of you have been at this for much longer than we have. And @oxinfree -- "sperm machine" lol, yes!

  • I agree with all the ladies above. We took an extended break, and now we're back. I'm 37 so I definitely have that feeling that I wasted valuable time, but mentally I just couldn't keep going. Had to do what was right for us. Good luck on your current cycle!

  • Sometimes taking time off helps you to refocus and get your energy back to positive level. When my first cycle was cancelled in July I was overwhelmed and I felt so defeated. Having low AMH I anticipated I wouldn't get a lot of eggs at retrieval, but I didn't expect to not even get that far to be cancelled because I only had 1 follie growing. You know when you are at your emotional breaking point and when you need some time to re-adjust. If you do decide to take a break... make it a point to have as much fun as you can... just do all the things you are limited to doing when you are in a IF cycle. You'll know when you are ready to get back in the game.
