Multiple Baby Areas

I'm curious how other moms are planning to or have managed a multi floor house with possibly multiple baby areas.

For example, we have a two story house. Downstairs are the main living areas and master. Upstairs is our loft/playroom and kids' bedrooms. On top of being pregnant currently, I have a two year old son.

Baby girl has a bedroom upstairs with a crib, dresser, changing table, etc. However, I plan to breastfeed and keep her in my room til she's sleeping through the night. My son was 8 months old when we transitioned him to his bedroom. I spend chunks of the day downstairs cooking/cleaning/laundry etc. and I spend chunks of the day upstairs with my son playing/homeschooling.

Right now, her room is perfectly setup and I have a cosleeper in my bedroom. I have an armoire in my bedroom I was thinking of making a changing/baby station. Then I remembered the problem of my husband working nights and sleeping during the day, so I don't really want to wake him up going in the bedroom constantly. I'm thinking of keeping the armoire as a baby area especially for middle of the night, but maybe having a diaper caddy for the downstairs living areas.

Ugh I'm probably way over thinking this. I don't want to have to trek upstairs every time she needs a change, or downstairs if we are already upstairs playing with big brother.

Any ideas or experience?!

Re: Multiple Baby Areas

  • Like you we have his room set up, I'm putting a pack n play in my room, also a diaper caddy in my room and downstairs. That's easy. We are keeping the maamaroo downstairs and keeping a swing up. I have a 3 yr old and will need to either wear him a lot to be hands free or have him in a swing or something. Plan on strapping baby into everything is what I'm told so that our curious little ones won't get a hold of them.

  • I get the washable chucks pads- they are very similar to a waterproof mattress cover but only a small pad, I'm having one of those and a small stock of diapers and wipes, etc so I have them close by. You definitely won't want to go upstairs every time baby needs a diaper
  • We have multiple floors and multiple pets to manage. I set up a playpen/bassinet for the main floor where there's a kitchen and multiple dogs. Upstairs, our bedroom with bedside cradle, baby room across the hallway with crib and another bed... Hubby thinks we need to keep the bed in there because we might want to sleep seperatley. We're just going to adapt once LO gets here.
  • I have three floors and keep a diaper caddy on each floor in the room I spend the most time in with baby. In there, when newborn I keep an extra outfit and burp cloth, along with all the other stuff.

  • We have multiple levels here too and I keep a changing table/diapers/diaper genie on each level so LO can be changed wherever I am. I also have a bassinet in my room along with some necessities there or LO such as extra clothes, blankets, burp rags, etc... I also have necessities on our main living area along with a bassinet there.
  • We have a traditional colonial style house so our bedroom is on the same level as the kids' rooms. All baby stuff upstairs is in baby's room. Downstairs we'll have the pack-n-play and a stash of diapers and wipes and a couple changes of clothings so I don't have to trek upstairs for every diaper change and blowout. I spend most of my day either in the kitchen or the family room which is just off the kitchen and for that I have a little bounce seat that isn't large or heavy so I can easily move it to wherever I am. Plus our high chair has an adjustable seat so it can tilt into a reclined position to act as a baby seat for infants and newborns for when I want to get him off the floor. I also plan on wearing the baby a lot so I can do things hands free with my older son.
  • I don't have 2 stories, but I plan to have diapers in our master bedroom at night and living room during the day. My DH works nights as well so I will want to stay out of the bedroom during the day. I have a cart from Ikea that I plan the have in our room at night and wheel out in the morning. It has all the baby necessities on it. Maybe something like that will work for your first floor and you can use the baby room upstairs.

What cart is it from ikea?

Thanks for all your responses ladies, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I was feeling like I was overdoing it with multiple changing areas and/or a caddy. My only big challenge will be that I cloth diaper and I'll need to keep the dirty diapers more collected so they can be washed frequently.

  • This one, https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/30216536/ I have had it for a while, it is so great for all kinds of things but I think it will be perfect for baby!
  • I have three floors and figure there needs to be a place for changes and sitting on each floor. The nursery is on the third floor, so the crib and dresser with changing pad are up there. Our room is on the second where there is the bassinet and one of those fold-up changing stations. On the first floor I got an extra changing pad and am setting up the changing table on the counter in the laundry room. I have a bouncer and a mamaroo. One will go on the first floor and the other will go wherever it seems needed, maybe in a bathroom to facilitate showering? I am a FTM and not sure how this is all gonna look. I do feel certain that I'm not going to be wanting to run from floor to floor but it was also starting to feel excessive to me.
  • With my son I left a container with changing supplies and a few changes of clothes on each floor. It worked well.
  • @emzie54
Not excessive at all. We lived in a ranch style house with a finished basement when my son was born and it was sooo much easier to have multiple stashes and changing areas. You're tired and stressed enough the first few weeks so anything to make the days easier is worth it.
  • Hmmm lots of good ideas. I've been thinking about this too since we have 3 levels (basement where the TV is, kitchen & living room w/o any TV but where we spend lots of time, upstairs with master bedroom & nursery). Even though it sounds big, it's actually a really small house with very little space - was built in 1920, so we don't have the room for a lot of extra stuff. I'm now just thinking about leaving our diaper bag & portable changing pad (once I actually buy these... don't have them yet) on the main floor, changing table in the nursery, and nothing in the basement. We'll see how that works.
  • Stm... Babies here don't even go to the basement/upstairs of our little 1920's house, but I still keep diapers, wipes, burp clothes, etc handy in the main living area. Blow outs and fountain spit ups happen, and that's not a good time to both be covered in goop, trekking across all of the carpet, opening doors, etc. I like to have at least enough necessities handy to clean him up, then lay him in the pack n play in case I require a wardrobe change, or carpet/furniture got it. Lol
