What to splurge on for baby?

I have a gift card to a baby store that carries a variety of baby items that are quite a bit more expensive than what I would normally buy. I'd like to take advantage of the situation and get something indulgent, but I don't know what to choose!

We have all of the things that you "need" for a baby-- crib, bedding, stroller, clothes, blankets, even a high-chair, and I'd hate to waste the money on diapers. Bottles and pacifiers are out as well.

What would you love to buy for your baby if some extra cash dropped in your lap? I need ideas!

I don't consider diapers a waste of money. If it were me, I'd splurge on something smaller and save the rest for diapers or clothes as needed. Or I'd just hold on to it until I saw a need for it. We have a few gift cards we haven't used because I don't know what we'll need a couple of months down the road and I would rather have those to use rather than purchasing something I may only use once, essentially wasting the money.

  • I am stockpiling babies r us gift cards for diapers. Will definitely need them.
  • Personally, I feel like the 'splurge' is really for me because the baby doesn't know what it's wearing, playing with, etc.  I feel like the only thing I can think of besides true, expensive necessities (like the diaper examples above) is to save it for a nice outfit for an event, like if I was invited to a wedding or something important where the baby needed to be dressed up. However, since I wouldn't be able to plan ahead for what size the baby would wear at that point, I'd save it until I needed it. :)
  • I decided to splurge on a designer model stroller. I figured it was a good combo of buying something that i needed anyway, but spending a little extra on something i really wanted. I know you said that you already have a stroller, but is there any other item that you still need to buy that you could maybe splurge and buy the upmarket model/version/etc? Otherwise i would do as pps have suggested and just save it, what you think is important now may be lower on the priority list in a few months.
  • I want to splurge on a nice diaper bag. After all, you will use it daily and it can be a fashion piece.

  • I have no idea what I would splurge on! I really need to research baby products. I won a babies r us gift card and am waiting to use it until we have our registry and know the sex. Though the sex won't matter, because we will probably use it to buy the crib!

  • A great babycarrier is always my splurge item. But I like to splurge a little on some new super cute cloth diapers too.

  • I don't know what this store carries, but if its higher end, I doubt they sell diapers.

If I was really splurging (and really had everything else I needed) I would buy some freshly picked moccasins.

  • Maybe a keepsake item that you would normally not spend the money on but will be nice to have later?
  • I second the diaper bag. I wouldn't personally splurge on it for myself but my MIL insisted that she wanted to get DH and I a really nice one. We picked out the petunia pickle bottom boxy and she gave it to me last weekend and it's so nice. You can feel the quality in the materials- especially the magnetic closures.

  • @sarcasm101 That is a great idea! I'm going to see if they have them.

@mcklough A PPB diaper bag was my first purchase after having my viability scan-- I'd always wanted one!
  • I would go for a really nice diaper bag. It's technically for you and baby or a baby carrier.

  • I decided I'm going to splurge on a rocker/glider. I will be breastfeeding So I'll be spending a lot of time in that chair so I want to get the most comfortable one possible. My friend told me she falls asleep in hers all the time so it's important to get a really good one

I'm on board with the pps who said you should get something for yourself! A cool diaper bag or a piece of maternity wear you might wear twice but look hot doing it.

Another option would be to buy some keepsake items that are maybe a bit over the top or higher priced than normal?

You could also put that money towards upgrading a piece of essential equipment (like going nuts and getting an uppababy stroller which i have heard are miraculous)

Our splurge for our daughter - due right before christmas and right after hanukkah, was going to be truly ridiculous - a dearly costly velvet dress - growing up i had a velvet dress every year at holiday time in either blue or green. I haven't been able to find one that will fit a newborn though. But I'm still looking. A very pricey piece of clothing is kind of a stupid purchase - except that when she grows out of it, you can frame it in a shadow box. My mom did that with my first dress and hat. She still has it.
  • Maybe a really nice bedside crib/bassinet. I just bought a used one that has a side that lowers so that I can feed at night and then set her right into her bed without getting up. Its almost like co sleeping except she still has her own bed so that I don't have to worry about her suffocating in our sheets or me rolling over onto her.
  • @tripledaggerWed95976 makes a great point about the glider. Ours was the best money we have ever spent! We use it all of the time. It made those first few months nursing so much easier!
  • I'd buy diapers....buy alllll the diapers!

A nice glider is essential even if you don't breastfeed.
  • I would splurge on a carrier.
    The Tula specifically.

Ummm spending it on diapers is not a waste. You will come to understand that. You could hang on to the gift card so whenever you realize something would be helpful once the baby comes, you have it.

ETA: it's hard to know what YOU will use and what DC will like until he or she is here. I have a glider but it's been rarely used. Shrug. Somethings I would swear by other ppl don't find useful etc. I think a lot of the baby splurges are excessive but that's just me.
